GIS (Geographic Information System)
• Technology that incorporates geographical features with data to map and analyze real-world problems
• Combination of the "where“ with the "what" location and geography + business events and attribute data
• A system designed to collect, store, integrate, manipulate, analyse & display data in a spatially referenced environment
• It combines common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the benefits of visual and geographic analysis offered by maps
• It s a multidisciplinary field--many disciplines contribute e.g. cartography, geodesy, photogrammetry, cognitive psychology, spatial statistics, geomatics
GIS Components
GIS Terminology Map: is generally static and is a cartographic output. Once created, the map does not
provide any additional information.
Attribute: descriptive information about the properties of events, features, or entities associated with a location, such as the ownership of a parcel of land, or the population of a neighborhood, or the wind speed and direction over a point on the ground.
Cartography: the study and practice of making maps.
Geocoding: assignment of alphanumeric codes or coordinates to geographically referenced data. Examples include the two-letter country codes, or the coordinates of a residence computed from its address.
Geospatial data: information that identifies the geographic location and characteristics of natural and constructed features and boundaries on Earth.
Global Positioning System (GPS): a navigation system supported by a constellation of satellites placed in orbit by the U.S.
GIS Layers
• Represented as several different layers
• Each layer holds data about aparticular kind of feature• Over 500 data layers are
available

GIS Industry Outlook - Demand
According to Global Industry Analysts, Inc (GIA), the GIS industry is expected to grow to US$10.6 Billion worldwide by 2015
Growth picked up after a dismal 2009 that saw a drop of 2%
Sales of GIS/Geospatial software, services and data grew to a robust 10.3% in 2010 with US$4.4 billion.
2011 is expected to bring in growth exceeding 8.3%(US$5 billion)
Global sales to governmental agencies remains strong with an 7.2 % annual rate over the last 8 years.
GIS Industry Outlook - DemandThe largest demand is for GIS data ahead of GIS Software and Services and has grown at a annual rate of 15.5 percent for the last eight years and this trend is expected to continue
North America accounts for almost half the industry’s annual sales with an 11% annual growth rate for the last 8 years,
Asia/Pacific with a 8.7% annual rate
Europe grew at a slower 7.9% annual rate
Europe, North America and Asia Pacific account to just 8% of total industry sales
Growth areas for the GIS Industry in 2012
Adoption of HTML5 as the preferred technology for online mapping.
Open source GIS will continue to grow and start to take its place among the commercial options as preferred desktop, mobile, and online mapping software.
GIS will move beyond the simple display and query of online mapping and companies will debut technology that provides more analytical and data processing capabilities via the cloud.
