Children are not
born afraid of
math; they learn to
fear it!75 million students in India suffer from Math Phobia. 25% of students in your school face emotional and physical trauma before a math test. And, its not even their fault.
How many students “hate
maths” in your school?
Ask a [non-math] teacher to go to a class and ask students to raise their hands if they hate maths. You may be amazed at what you discover.
Students of class 5, 7 and 9 are most prone to developing acute math phobia. Watch out!
Is it possible that some day NO
STUDENT in your school hates math?
MATH PHOBIA
Figuring Out
Only For Schools That Really Care!
Understanding Math Phobia The Consequences The Causes Eradication Plan
presents
What is Math Phobia?
Math Phobia is the “fear” of maths.
Being afraid of maths is different
from being afraid of “studying” or
“exams”. A student suffering from
Math Phobia behaves very differently
before a math class or a math test
than s/he does for other subjects.
Researchers believe that math
phobia activates the same region in
the brain that is associated to
“pain”.
Students with Math Phobia may
not be afraid of other subjects.
In a competitive education system with large
classrooms, students with math phobia are usually
ignored. Is it not the responsibility of educators to
remove this fear?
Causes of MathPhobiaMath Phobia arises as a result of:
1. unpleasant experiences associated with learning
mathematics;
2. perceived dangers; or
3. perceptions associated with the subject.
Some Common Triggers of Math Phobia:1. Failures in math exams/tests
2. Being ridiculed/punished by parents/teachers in front of others
3. Being branded as “weak/poor” student because of performance in maths
4. Fear of maths in parents/teachers being passed on to students
5. Inability of parents to help children with maths
6. Social perception that maths is “hard/challenging” to master
7. Pressure from peers/teachers/parents to perform to a particular level
In most students,
Math Phobia is
caused by teachers
or parents.
