Positive Impact

On Library Users Provides equitable access for both on and off-

campus users Access anytime, anywhere Replay and repeat as needed without time

constraints On the Library

Relatively easy to integrate into OPAC Reduces wear and tear on hard copies No theft or missing items No audiovisual support staff needed to set up AV

Streaming Defined

Streaming - “The transfer of video and audio material over a network (now esp. the Internet) as a continuous, real-time stream of data.”* Items play as they are downloaded – not after they are downloaded.

Streaming Server - A streaming server contains RTP and RTSP protocols that allow media to be sent to a client so that it can be played back immediately and without waiting for it to download completely first.

Technical Issues

Campus or the library needs a streaming server

Does the embed code work in all OPAC’s? Inclusion or exclusion of HTML in

bibliographic records Ezproxy linking needs work

Need some scripting work to include a working proxy string in the bibliographic record

Page 28: Embedded Videos: from Invisibility to Visibility

Future Plans

Enlarging the streaming media collection

Purchase a streaming server or gain access to one

Icon and MARC delimiter for noting streaming media in our Voyager catalog
