TASK ANALYSIS

Task analysis can be applied to identify language components of a concept as well. Academic content is represented by a type of language typically used in textbooks and lectures, the language of the classroom so to speak. To be successful at school, language learners must master both the content and the language it represents in academic settings. Basic Academic Concept - 2014

TASK ANALYSIS

We may begin the analysis anywhere, but here we will begin with a general description or a definition of a concept or principle to be learned.

TASK ANALYSIS

Following are some definitions of "induction" presented in school related texts. We will task analyze each.

Electromagnetic induction is a process where a conductor placed in a changing magnetic field or a conductor moving through a stationary magnetic field causes the production of a voltage across the conductor.

Academic Language DevelopmentLet's list the terms used and then write them in sentences. Here are the terms.

process, conductor, placed in, changing magnetic field, moving conductor, stationary magnetic field, causes, production, voltage

We notice that these terms are expressed in one sentence. Since there are many terms, we may express them in many sentences. Here are the sentences.

Electromagnetic induction is a process. Placing a conductor in a changing magnetic field is a process. Moving the conductor through a stationary magnetic field is also a process. The process produces voltage across the conductor.

These sentence structures may seem somewhat complex to language learners. So we may further simplify the sentences as follow.

I place a conductor in a changing magnetic field. I move a conductor through a stationary magnetic field. A conductor in a changing magnetic field produces voltage across the conductor. A moving conductor through a stationary magnetic field produces voltage across the conductor.

Let's take another definition and analyze it the same way. Here is the definition.

Definition 2[Electromagnetic induction is] the production of an electromotive force either by motion of a conductor through a magnetic field so as to cut across the magnetic flux or by a change in the magnetic flux that threads a conductor.See McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, 6E, Copyright © 2003 by The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

We note that magnetic field and magnetic flux are used in this definition. We may define magnetic flux as a measure of the strength of a magnetic field and use magnetic flux in our analysis.

We may accept that cut across and thread have similar meanings. We may also accept the meaning of electromotive force as voltage. So we may write the definition in the sentences below.

(1) The motion of a conductor that cuts across a magnetic flux changes the amount of the magnetic field. The change in magnetic field strength produces voltage.

(2) A changing magnetic flux threads or cuts across the conductor. This changes the strength of the magnetic field. The change in magnetic field produces voltage.

If these sentence patterns are too complex for a language learner, the sentence patterns as illustrated in Definition 1 may be used. These sentence structures may be used in conjunction with an activity or pictures.
