Hi, this is AJ, and wel-come back for secretnumber three.

Now, the last secret, the lastrule, was maybe your favorite, right? No more grammar rules.Good news for you, but this oneis probably the most importantrule. This is really the centralkey. It’s the main one. This ruleor this secret is this. Learn withyour ears, not with your eyes.Again, learn with your ears, notwith your eyes.

Now, of course, we’re teach-ing you how to speak excellentEnglish, speak, and to speakwell you have to have excellentlistening. See, speech comesfrom listening. Here’s the prob-lem. In school you mostlylearned with your eyes. Whatdid you do? You read a lot oftextbooks. You watched theteacher write a lot of stuff onthe board. Maybe you listenedto the teacher explain Englishin your language. So, you’rehearing your language, not Eng-lish, in your classroom.

In general, what’s happeningis you’re learning, learning, learning with your eyes. That’swhat happened and may be stillhappening now. I don’t know, hopefully not. Not after today. There’s a big problem with this.See, when you’re just readingand trying to learn grammarrules, for example, by reading

grammar books and you’re try-ing to learn vocabulary by read-ing vocabulary lists and you’retrying to read English dialoguesand then you’re doing writtentests and then you’re doing allthese written activities and writ-ten drills, none of that is help-ing you with your speaking.

That’s why you probably readEnglish much better than youspeak it or understand it. It’s acommon problem. It’s becausein school you learned with youreyes all the time or most of thetime and you did very littlelearning with your ears. Listen-ing, listening, listening is secretnumber three and is probablythe most important one. Yougotta listen a lot. You’ve got tolisten to a lot, a lot, a lot ofEnglish. That’s the key to greatspeaking. There’s a lot of re-search about this, a lot of aca-demic research, excellentresearch that shows that listen-ing is the way you improve yourspeaking. Not reading, not prac-

ticing speaking in a mirror orsomething. No, it’s lots and lotsand lots of listening, lots of it.

Now, this is so obvious, butlet’s imagine a baby, a littlebaby, a little American babywe’ll say. This little American

baby of course needs to learnEnglish. So, how will we teachthis American baby to learnEnglish? Will we buy grammarbooks and try to make the babystudy grammar? No, we won’t.We could try, but it won’t work.

Would we try to force thebaby to read immediately? Ofcourse, not. So, how does thislittle baby learn English? Oneway and one way only, listening.

For six to 12 months thatbaby just sits there and listens.Listens, listens, listens, listens, listens to the parents mostlyand maybe brothersand sisters andmaybe other peoplein the family speak-ing English con-stantly. And, ofcourse, when par-ents speak to a babythey don’t speak dif-ficult English. Theyspeak very simpleeasy English and eventually thebaby starts to learn a few wordslike mommy, daddy and maybefood. Really simple stuff, butthey start to learn a little bit. That’s the beginning and thenthey start learning groups ofwords, two words or threewords together.

All of this is happeningthrough listening and for awhile the baby can understanda lot. The small child can actu-ally understand a lot of English, but cannot speak very much. Itis natural and normal that thelistening level is higher than thespeaking level and then eventu-ally, of course, the baby willstart to speak. One word, two

words in the beginning andthen bigger phrases and sen-tences and it just keeps going.

That baby learns to speak ex-cellent English through listen-ing, by learning with the baby’sears and that’s what you have todo. You have to go back andstart learning English now,

change the wayyou’re learning it andinstead learn it like ababy. Learn withyour ears, lots andlots of listening.

Now, like a baby, you should not focuson difficult listening. This is another prob-lem that schools

have and a lot of students have.Maybe they do practice somelistening, but when they do it’sso difficult. They’re listening tosample TOEFL tests and thingslike that, extremely difficult vo-cabulary, very academic and for-mal, not really natural normalEnglish for normal situations. It’s so difficult that you cannotreally understand it easily andautomatically.

If you do that, if you listen toEnglish that’s too difficult, you’re learning will be very, very, very slow. You want the oppo-site. Like a baby, you want tolisten to lots of easy English.Easy listening is the key. Easylistening will give you great t

speaking. That’s what all the re-search shows and it’s very pow-erful. So, you probably need tobe listening to things that aremuch easier than you think.

Here’s my basic rule for lis-tening. You should listen tosomething that you can under-stand 95% of it without a dic-tionary, 95%. That means youdon’t need a dictionary at all be-cause the other five percent youcan easily guess. If there is anew word or a new phrase thatcomes, you can guess themeaning because you under-stand everything else.

You understand the situation. You understand most of it. Soyou can kind of guess themeaning of that new word andthat’s how you learn, naturally, new vocabulary. That’s how Ilearned it all as a child growingup and it’s how you should belearning it too, with your ears, listening to very easy English.

Now, eventually, you listenand listen and listen and youunderstand 100%. Well then it’stime for something a little moredifficult. Not a lot more diffi-cult, a little more difficult. Thenyou listen to that again andagain and again. When it be-comes 100% then you findsomething a little more diffi-cult. In this way you will rapidlyincrease your ability.

Here’s what else happens.

After six to 12 months, it de-pends on the person you willfind yourself starting to speakEnglish automatically. Correctphrases and words will pop outof your mouth. They’ll come outwithout you thinking at all. Justlike your language. When youspeak your language you’re notalways thinking about vocabu-lary and translations and all thisstuff. No, it just comes out, boom. You want to say some-thing and it comes out. That’swhat will happen with English, but first you need to focus onlistening and just listening forsix to 12 months.

It’s okay if you speak a littlebit, but mostly you should bedoing lots and lots and lots of

easy listening every day. Howcan you do this? Go get someeasy audio books, easy audio ar-ticles. You can get my lessons. You can get our lessons. Putthem on an iPod and every mo-ment you have listen. Be listen-ing, listening, listening to thisEnglish all the time.

When you wake up in themorning, listen to English, youknow, just 10 or 15 minutes. When you’re going to work or toschool or you’re at home clean-ing the house, whatever, listento English some more, 20 - 30minutes. When you have a breakduring the day at lunch, listen toEnglish 10-15 minutes. Whenyou’re going home at night ormaking dinner, listen to English

10-15-20-30 minutes. Beforeyou go to bed, listen to Englishagain 10-15-20-30 minutes.

By doing little pieces of listen-ing all through the day, you caneasily listen for a total of one totwo hours every single day. When you do that you will findyou will make big improve-ments. It takes usually about sixmonths, maybe less for you, maybe more. It depends on howmuch you listen. It depends onhow easy it is. Easier is better.

So, that’s it. It’s simple. Thisis such a simple rule. Learnwith your ears, not with youreyes. One last note: your listen-ing ability should naturally andalways be higher than yourspeaking ability.

See, what happens is your lis-tening ability pulls up yourspeak ing ability. It happens au-tomatically. You don’t need tothink about it. It’s easy. All youhave to focus on is listening andas you get better and better lis-tening your speaking will natu-rally improve. It’s like it pulls itup, pulls it up, pulls it up, pullsit up.

Now, the only problem somepeople have is psychological. You might have stress and nerv-ousness and things like thatthat cause you to have problemwhen it’s time to speak. We’lltalk about that later. In ourcourses we help you get rid ofnervousness so that’s not aproblem anymore, but for thissecret, this rule, all I want youto do is focus on listening.Learn with your ears, not withyour eyes. It’s simple and easyand very, very powerful.

All right, I will see you tomor-row for your next secret. It’salso a very good one and a very, very powerful one. Remember, this is a whole system so youneed to use all of these, allseven of these secrets. Eachone of them is powerful, butwhen you put them all togetherit’s a super powerful system thatwill give you excellent Englishspeaking.

All right, I’ll see you tomorrow.Have a great day, bye-bye. ■
