The roles of a teacher
Controller : here the teacher takes control from the front, they give order, and intruct students to do things.
prompter: i sometimes we want our students to be independent and creative but before they go to that stage we have to guide them. We should act as a prompter, guide them sensitively. Here we act as helper that gives them guidance to develop their english independently.
Participant: the teacher here act as a participant but beware of dominating the activity.
Reasource: here the teacher act as an information resource cause sometimes they still need help to find something and we have to tell them that information. But remember, no body is perfect in other words we are a know all person and we also cannot provide all the informations that make the students becomeing an over-realiant person.
The Roles of a Teacher,
continued
Tutor: it is a combination of a prompter and a
resource. it is easier if we do this in a smaller
class or groups. Because in a large class we
affraid that we cannot give a more intimate
relation. Just dont give it too much or too little.
so it is obvious that we cannot only be one of
the roles mentioned above. Experience can
help us to decide when we can be one of
those roles.
Organising students and
activities
Engage : prepare the students to receive a
new material
Instruct: tell the students the steps in the
teaching and learning process. Sometimes we
need to give it several times or even give it in
their mother tounge to make them understand.
Initiate the activity : give them a clear timing.
Organise feedback : evaluate the activities or
make it as homework or anything else.
Teacher as a Performer
As I often said that every teacher may perform
different roles, depend on the way they act in
the classroom. The teacher can perform
differently not only based on their personality
that affect their behaviour but also depend on
the classroom need. Such as when they act as:
Rapport is the relationship that the students have
with their teacher and the vice versa.
There are four characteristics to make sure that you have a succesfull relationship with the students:
1. Recognising students: remember their names using many strategies
2. Listening to students : show that we are interested in what they say. Dont only use your ear but also your eyes and body.
3. Respecting students: be wise in critizizing and praising
4. Being even handed : treat your students equally.
The Teacher as The Teaching
Aid
Ways to make your students understand more:
a. Mime and gestures : use your face
expression and body movement to express
the words.
b. Teacher as language model: use good
language cause your students will imitate
you.
c. Provide a comprehensible input: mind your
talk time.
Wich one do you think better, a
native speaker teacher or a
non native english speaker
teacher?
It is about the quality of
teaching more
