Introduction to the Host Setting

• Service learning hours were completed during Internship I while working with individual students as they used technology in the computer lab to help with reading skills

• Worked with a 4th grade TMH student and 2 7th grade TMH students in Orange County Public Schools

• Starfall reading, E-Blocks software, and FCAT Explorer

Engagement Activities

• The students were struggling readers for their age because of their disabilities

• Worked in the computer lab in the elementary school and in the classroom computer center at the middle school

• Worked with the students one-on-one each day while I was doing my internship

• Teachers selected the students that they felt would most benefit from the extra reading help

Participant Demographics

• The 4th grade student was an ESOL student that didn’t read yet. He was just beginning to recognize the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. His intellectual disability caused him to have a severe delay. The 7th grade girls were reading on about the 1st grade level.

• All of the students were coded with intellectual disabilities which means that they most likely have an IQ below 70.

• They are able to learn, it takes time as they learn much slower than the average student. I was lucky because all 3 students were eager to learn and have the one-on-one attention.

Connections to Your Course

• My service learning hours were for EEX 3241 and for EEX 4763. That is why I had to incorporate using technology with my service learning time.

• I have a clearer picture of how to motivate students, the benefits of using technology, and UDL.

Civic Engagement

• I think that everyone should be required to perform a civic engagement. There are so many children and adults that could really benefit from it.

• I think that people with disabilities can get more out of it because they are often discriminated against.

• I learned about myself and my ability to help others through this project.

Final Thoughts

• Service Learning Rocks!

• Spend time helping others and you will both be rewarded!

• Everyone has a civic duty to volunteer!
