Facts• In Sweden, all children between the ages of 7-16

must attend school.

• Education is compulsory and free of charge.

• Almost all compulsory school students continue on directly to upper secondary school (gymnasium).

• A new curriculum structure is planned for the year of 2011.

• In the new curriculum system students and schools have to achieve the set goals.

The system

• The Swedish school system is goal-based with a high degree of local responsibility.

• Every municipality / region shall adopt a local school plan based on the curriculum and the set syllaby.

The curriculum

• The curriculum for the Swedish school system is issued by the government and parliament of Sweden.

• The missions, goals and values of what the swedish schools should aim for is described in the curriculum.

• In the curriculum there are also guidelines for how to perform and execute the set goals, values and missions.

• There are three linked curriculums in Sweden for the different types and grades of school.

• Develop a knowledge of instruments and vocals.

• Focus on ensemble playing.

• Develop confidence in their own ability to sing and become aware of the opportunities it provides for development and its social importance.

• Develop the ability to create their own music.

• Develop the ability of listening to music.
