+Summary for Article 1 This article focuses on how to better motivate and

assist students in improving their work, particularly their blogging assignments. The author states that blogging helps students to become more motivated to put forth their best work because they know that they will have a broader audience than just the teacher.

The idea purposed in the article was to use teacher podcasts to help students with proofreading and revision. After a student posts their blog assignment, the teacher reads the student’s work on a podcast.

+Summary for Article 1 cont. The reasoning behind the teacher podcasts to assist in

proofreading and revising was that this could allow students to hear their work as the reader reads it and react to the reader’s interpretations of their work. The ultimate goal was to help students not only proofread for mechanical errors, but to really revise their work by rethinking and rewriting. This is a process the author called “proof-revising”.

Ultimately, this new method helped students adjust and react to reader’s responses and allowed them to see their work in a new way.

+Personal Reflection for Article 1

I think this article proposed a great idea. New and innovative ways of assisting students like this should be shared and considered by other educators. A particular quote from the article seemed to explain exactly why the idea of a teacher podcast on a student’s blog worked, “When you listen to a story read aloud by someone else, it helps you hear things as they are specifically written. When you proof with your eyes only, you read it like you think you wrote it. You don’t always catch errors”(Davis & McGrail, p.522). Hearing how their work is read by others will help students adjust to the reader’s reactions.

used in the curriculums in more and more schools, and how to encourage blogging that will be most effective. The author explains that in today’s society, students need to be prepared to interact in the new world of literacies. This includes email, internet, blogging, etc. Blogging helps to facilitate communication and increase reading comprehension.

After going over the basics steps of how to set up a blog, the article focuses on something knows as higher order thinking blogging, or HOT blogging.

+Summary for Article 2 cont. The purpose of HOT blogging is exactly as it’s name

suggests; to encourage students to go above and beyond to get the most out of blogging. Hot blogging consists of 4 simple steps: “Bolster background”- the teacher should provide activities

and questions to set up a background knowledge. “Prime the pump”- this step encourages students to think

about what they have learned from the background knowledge and share their initial thoughts.

“Continue conversation”- the students should summarize and synthesize what they have learned.

“Make multiplicity explicit”- the students encounter and comment on different ideas in the classroom blog.

+Personal Reflection for Article 2

I think this is an article that any teacher who has incorporated blogging into their curriculum should read. It not only provides a background of why blogging is important and how to set it up, but it details the formula on how to make blogging a success. If there is no structure to blogging in the classroom, it could end up being useless. In the future, if I ever try blogging as part of a curriculum, I will absolutely refer to this HOT blogging method or something similar to make blogging as beneficial as possible.

Students need new reading comprehension strategies to effectively navigate these systems. +Personal Reflection for Article 3

I think this article brings up a very important part of students’ education in today’s society. It is critical for students to know how to effectively navigate through the internet to find reliable information. Hours and hours of time could be wasted if students do not have this knowledge. I personally was taught in school how to effectively search for information and it has been extremely helpful throughout my education. I will try and make sure that my students know how to search for information on the internet in the future.

+Conclusion

Becoming an educator in today’s society requires different teaching strategies and content than in previous years. Future educators should have a background knowledge of how to use the internet and technology effectively both as a medium for curriculum activities and to prepare students to be involved in the world we live in. The three articles all describe different techniques to do just that. By using blogging effectively to reach students or preparing students for how to find information on the internet, I think these articles helped me to realize how to more effectively prepare my students by using the internet and technology.
