Begin with a “discovery” search

• Enter your search phrase in the box on the library home page

• Use natural language but keep your phrase short, just two or three words to describe what you’re trying to find

• Click the “Go” button • Select some books or eBooks from the list

and click on their titles• You’ll see a new page with subject headings

on the right of the screen• Jot down the best subject headings for later

or click them to run new searches now

Page 5: Edu532 Library Research Module 1 discovery search fa2014

“Discovery” search limitations

• The discovery search engine cannot see the subject headings for articles

• It can see those for book/eBooks• It is looking for the words in your

search phrase wherever it can find them (titles, summaries, abstracts, etc.)

• You’ll want those “controlled vocabulary” terms (Subject Headings) to streamline your database searches

We will ship print books to you

• We ship to you free of charge, but you pay to ship them back to us

• Not all books are available in electronic format

• If we have a print book on the shelf, it wasn’t available as an eBook but is a key resource for your studies

• Use the Book Request form to place your order (home page > Services > Forms > Book Request form)

• Allow adequate time for shipment
