Welcome to the online library!
My name is Sandy Hawes.
I’ll be your research guide for this series of tutorials:
1. “Discovery” search method
2. Subject heading searches
3. Peer-reviewed articles
4. Citation help/EasyBib
5. Finding full-text from a citation
SLH @ Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, April 2014
Navigate to the Saint Leo University library home page• From any saintleo.edu webpage, use
the “Find it fast” tool and select Library from the list OR
• Logon to my.saintleo.edu and select Library from the top toolbar OR
• Within your LearningStudio classroom, choose Library from the Resources tab OR
• Bookmark the address http://saintleolibrary.cloudaccess.net
Begin with a “discovery” search
• Enter your search phrase in the box on the library home page
• Use natural language but keep your phrase short, just two or three words to describe what you’re trying to find
• Click the “Go” button • Select some books or eBooks from the list
and click on their titles• You’ll see a new page with subject headings
on the right of the screen• Jot down the best subject headings for later
or click them to run new searches now
“Discovery” search limitations
• The discovery search engine cannot see the subject headings for articles
• It can see those for book/eBooks• It is looking for the words in your
search phrase wherever it can find them (titles, summaries, abstracts, etc.)
• You’ll want those “controlled vocabulary” terms (Subject Headings) to streamline your database searches
We will ship print books to you
• We ship to you free of charge, but you pay to ship them back to us
• Not all books are available in electronic format
• If we have a print book on the shelf, it wasn’t available as an eBook but is a key resource for your studies
• Use the Book Request form to place your order (home page > Services > Forms > Book Request form)
• Allow adequate time for shipment
Let’s give it a try
• Watch the video demonstration at http://screencast.com/t/x9X3woB6j
• Try your own sample search
• Complete the worksheet
• Bring your questions to class
• We’ll do a group activity together
