THE BIG QUESTION...

Page 3: Ed Tech session 1

WHAT IS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY?

Page 4: Ed Tech session 1

WHY ME?Personal interest in technology…how can we make a difference with it really

Page 5: Ed Tech session 1

WHAT IS FLIPPED LEARNING?The Flipped Classroom is NOT

Traditional model of the classroom is 'flipped' (a term coined by J.W Baker "the classroom flip" 2000)

BASIC content covered asynchronously at home

Practise and failure in class...NOT at home

Space is created for learning

Page 6: Ed Tech session 1

WHY FLIPPED LEARNING?

More collaboration, thinking skills, evaluating and creativity in learning.

All the things we know we should do, but where is the TIME?

“What is the best use of my limited face to face time with students?”

Bergmann & Sams

Videos are the vehicle to a more enhanced pedagogy in the classroom.

Page 7: Ed Tech session 1

THEORY?Socio-constructivism: The explicit promotion of self directed transformation of input, ie; pause, rewind, understand.

The video content catapults students into their ZPD prior to the beginning of the class.

JiTT (Novak et al 1999) model is used to inform me which concepts to explore further (co-constructivism). This is automated.

I can figure out the point of need and assist there with focus where I will be most effective (Wood 1976)

WAKEY WAKEY!ARE YOU USING ANY ED TECH PRODUCTS NOW?

HOW SUCCESSFUL (OR NOT) ARE THEY?

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TECHNOLOGY TO DO FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

Page 9: Ed Tech session 1

HOW DO I SET THIS UP?

Page 10: Ed Tech session 1

FINDINGSSelf Directedness?Data indicates that students spend on average 64% longer on tutorials than the tutorial itself

Engagement?"you go to maths and would regret having to do lots of textbook work, but now you go to practise what you have learned at home with more practical and fun activities” “I used to find maths boring, but now its not as boring, and it’s a challenge cos he teaches the basics in the video and set us a challenge… I don’t think I want to go back to a normal maths class next year”

TECHNOLOGY SHOULD ENHANCE PRACTICEPractice (good teaching) is enhanced through TIME

Time is leveraged by tools that:

‘Deliver’ content

Assess learning

Reduce workload

Page 12: Ed Tech session 1

CONTENT DELIVERY

YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF - ‘OLD SCHOOL’

OR USING THE iPAD APP ‘Explain Everything’

Page 13: Ed Tech session 1

ASSESS LEARNING

Page 14: Ed Tech session 1

ASSESS LEARNING

YOUR TURN!

● GO TO THE SOCRATIVE APP ON YOUR iPADS

● WHEN PROMPTED FOR A ROOM NAME, ENTER: mrjamieson

● TAKE THE QUIZ

WORKLOAD

If I am interested in leveraging time, we need to look at ways of cutting workload!
