Emiliano Zapata was born in the village of San Miguel Anencuilco in the state of Morelos the 8th of August 1879. The legendary Emiliano Zapata was a Mexican revolutionary who attained the status of hero for his commitment to land reform and his unfailing support for the disenfranchised. The son of mestizo parents, Zapata led a group of peasants who in 1909 sought to recover lands belonging to them that had been appropriated by hacienda owners. By 1910, Zapata and his men had occupied by force the expropriated land and distributed them among themselves. In 1911, Zapata joined Francisco Madero to overthrow Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz.
