What are eBooks?eBooks are digital resources that can be read on a variety of devices from tablets, phones and computers.
eBook readers such as Amazon’s Kindle and iBooks App on the iPad have popularised ebooks over the last few years.
There are multiple standards for ebooks and different features with each standard.
What are eBooks?Websites and other digital content versus ebooks?
The main difference between ebooks and other digital content is the attempt to reproduce some of the reading experience of a physical book – both in the layout of pages and the ease of use for navigation.
There are currently many choices of how to read and create ebooks.
DifferenceseBooks, as with many digital resources, have some advantages over traditional books:
● Can easily be amended, updated and distributed● Can be interactive with illustrations, 3D visualisations● Links can be made to web-based resources and further reading● Great for accessibility: Text size can be changed and spoken out
loud● Multiple bookmarks and notes can be made and stored along
with the book.● Multiple publishing options
What are eBooks?eBook StandardsAt the moment there are around 16 ‘standards’ for ebooks but there are currently 5 that are most popular:1. EPUB – A free an open standard that many devices support reading. Has support
for interactivity, video and pictures.2. Amazon Kindle Format – A standard that is propriety and used by Amazon’s
Kindle readers and for ebooks sold through the Amazon website. Now includes some interactivity and links to additional content
3. Apple iBooks – Another propriety standard (based on the EPUB standard)that requires and iPad or iPhone to read. Currently has the highest amount of interactivity and scope for additional features. Distributed through the Apple iBookstore.
4. Adobe PDF – A standard originally designed for containing printable versions of documents. Can be read on a wide variety of devices using Adobe Reader or without any additional software. Perhaps the most basic of the formats.
5. HTML5/CSS – Essentially an internet webpage that is often created in a way to recreate a book-like feel. Can be read on any device with an internet browser.

What’s Next?Current Approaches
Highly InteractiveFor highly interactive ebooks for use on iPads is to use Apple’s iBooks Author which is the current market leader in terms of features in this area – but only available on Macs and published iBooks are only compatible with Apple mobile devices. Articulate Storyline offers a good alternative for Windows computers. Alternatively a well-resourced team can create an interactive experience using web standards HTML5 and CSS.
Widest Reaching
Another approach to create a spectrum of versions – one using Apple’s iBooks Author, the other using Microsoft Word and then using a tool such as Smashwords which will produce copies in multiple formats.
What’s Next?University of Leeds - BLLTIG
13/01 A number of individuals across the institution have produced eBooks using the Apple iBook Author tool and wish to publish these within the Apple Bookstore for distribution to registered students and for download by external learners. The Group agreed that there should be a University-owned channel in the iBook Store and the benefits of using this channel rather than a personal account (support from the Digital Learning Team, brand association and so on) will be promoted to staff. This recommendation will be forwarded to BLSG for endorsement.
