The Permit

• Must be 15 1/2 years old

• Must possess permit at all times when driving

• Must be with licensed adult

• Between 11 - 5 a.m. must be with parent

• All occupants must wear seatbelts

• Valid for one year, but renewable

Obtaining Provisional Drivers License

• Must have held permit for six months with no tickets

• Must have BOTH parents’ signatures.

• Must possess at all times while driving

• All occupants must wear seatbelts

• Shall not transport more than one person under eighteen years old without adult accompaniment, unless that person is a household member

• Shall not drive between 11:00 and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian (work exemption available).

Curriculum

• We will be following the state recommended ADTSEA curriculum which covers attitudes, skills, and behaviors.

• Although “Hawaii Driving” is emphasized, it is not exclusive.

• GREAT free app for the iPhone

• Provides feedback on your braking, acceleration, and cornering skills

• Allows you to see your driving on a map.

• Enables you and your teen to have conversation based on objective data

Behind the Wheel (BTW) Requirements

• A 6-hour course is required by law.

• Punahou doesn’t provide BTW training.

• Punahou can recommend certain schools.

• Start around the beginning of November (halfway through).
