1. Basic Principles Of Genetics

A. The recessive will always be masked while the dominant is present.

B. Co-dominance is when none of the alleles are neither dominant or recessive.

C. The punnet square shows all the possible results for the offspring

2. Human Genome project

A. The Human Genome project began in 1990 and was completed in 2003 the goals were to Identify about 25,000 genes in the human DNA.

B. Some ethical logical issues was that the project had a greater risk of death.

C. You couldn’t be discriminated by your co-workers, if you had proof that you have a genetic disord

• B. Single Gene Disorder- Any genitic disorder affected by only one gene.(Down syndrome, Turner Syndrome, etc.)

• C. Chromosome Abnormalities- When something goes wrong during meiosis

• D.MultiFactor Disorder- A disorder with genetic and environmental causes.

• E. Genetic Counseling explains the options and risks for perspective parents.

Single Gene Genetic Disorders• A single gene disorder is the result of a single mutated gene. There are

estimated to be over 4000 human diseases caused by single gene defects. Single gene disorders can be passed on to subsequent generations in several ways. Genomic imprinting and uniparental disomy, however, may affect inheritance patterns. The divisions between recessive and dominant types are not "hard and fast" although the divisions between autos and X-linked types are (since the latter types are distinguished purely based on the chromosomal location of the gene). For example, achondroplasia is typically considered a dominant disorder, but children with two genes for achondroplasia have a severe skeletal disorder that achondroplasics could be viewed as carriers of. Sickle-cell anemia is also considered a recessive condition, but heterozygous carriers have increased resistance to malaria in early childhood, which could be described as a related dominant condition. When a couple where one partner or both are sufferers or carriers of a single gene disorder and wish to have a child they can do so through IVF which means they can then have PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) to check whether the fertilized egg has had the genetic disorder passed on.

What is a designer baby?

• A Baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilisation to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics.

Page 8: Designer babies

Argument 1

• It corrupts and destroys the purpose of having a child because you can choose if it has blue eyes or brown eyes or black hair over blond. Or if its black or white.

Argument 2

This Or That

This is a real baby.

This is a designer baby that went bad.

Page 10: Designer babies

Argument 3

Designer babies usally get picked on in school because they are different from other kids. Designer babies suffer social division which is when a person has no friends and are seperated socialy from other people.

Page 11: Designer babies

Argument 4

• Parents of designer babies shouldn’t get to pick what their child’s eye or hair color. James Hughes from the Center of Genitics and Society. Hughes says, “ he’s totally against designer babies and that they’re an insult to parents. Also it’s basicly saying to your child that I love you but your to short or to ugly.” Parents could also chose to get rid of obesity genes but that could also strike health problems.
