The Great Depression began after the Stock market crash of the late 1920’s, while Herbert Hoover was President.

In addition to the market crash, a combination of over farming and a large drought caused the Dust Bowl, witch dismantled American Agriculture.

The Great Depression destroyed many businesses that were once prosperous parts of the communities. This restaurant that had served a large group of customers was now abandoned.

Banks were some of the first businesses to close due to lack of trading on the crashed market.

Families had to wait for their food to be handed to them in bread lines. Though this helped starving workers, they still struggled to survive.

During the Depression, many people packed their bags and sought work in different areas of the country.

With incredibly low wages or unemployment families had no money to maintain their property. People often began to live in Shantytowns called Hoovervilles.

Even our capital city suffered from the Depression. Slums developed nationwide, and Poverty struck even the most prosperous environments. Both Herbert Hoover and FDR served as president during the depression.

If someone became ill during these hard times there was no money to pay for Doctor bills, so families had to hope for the best.

The entertainment industry was the only prosperous business during the depression. Picture shows were the only form of relief during the depression. People would go to the movies to see happier times.

Railroads suffered with the rest of the country. They were the main form of transportation for people and goods, but with no passengers and no freight, Railroads suffered a decline.
