TOP OF THE POPSText to Image RatioThe text to image ratio shows that there is more image on the page than text. This is a good representation of their target audience because they are likely to be attracted to short clips of text. If the text extracts were longer the target audience would become bored and uninterested. The text is laid out in small boxes for the reader to quickly read an extract and move on, keeping their interest.

Headline This takes up a large amount of the page to give the reader a quick overview of what the article is about and well as attracting their attention to read on further.

Target Audience: Young, Pre-teen/very young teen girls. Interested in popular culture and fashion.

Pull QuotesThese give hints to what the article is about and the theme of what the conversation contains. This is a further way to attract the reader’s attention.

Main ImageDominates the double page to show importance of the person interviewed. The celebrity is not dressed provocatively which makes the reader believe she is a role model for the young girl the magazine is trying to attract. By using minimal make-up and curling her hair, it shows a degree of innocence which relates again to the target audience. Direct eye contact pulls the readers attention to her and creates a connection between reader and magazine. Her body language is open with her shoulders back and gives an inference of confidence and honesty. Therefore the reader infers that the interview will be honest. They also interpret that she is confidence and inspire to be as confident as her.

StandfirstGives an introduction to what the article will be about. It introduces the artist and the main points that she will cover in the interview. Bold fonts and changes in colour draw attention to the stand first and again highlights the key points.

Text to Image ratioThe text ratio is much greater in Q Magazine because the attention span of it’s target audience is much greater than a young teen’s. It is not too over whelming and it broken up into paragraphs and columns making it much easier. The target audience will be looking to read the magazine for information but also escapism so this amount of text will do that.

Main ImageDominates the double page spread to highlighting the significance of the person interviewed. The model is posing provocatively in the image, showing the reader that she is confidence with her sex appeal and uses it as part of her appeal as an artist. In a magazine aimed at teenagers or young people, the focus would be predominately on the fact that she is not wearing clothes. However the context of a magazine aimed at an older audience this is not the main focus but instead is the inference of glamour and attractivenessThis is gained from her messy curly hair, smoky make-up and pouting lips.

HeadlineThe headline of the article is not very large and only introduces the artist’s name. Instead the large graphic feature of the drop cap attracts the read’s attention to the article. The Drop Cap covers a large amount of area of the double page spread’s article, almost highlighting the importance of the article.

Main ImageThe main image is a long shot of the artist and dominates the double page spread. The setting of the bingo hall links to the subject of the interview. Julian’s body language is leaning toward the camera and therefore the reader, creating a connection. Furthermore he looks confused which links into the erratic nature of Julian. The dark clothing makes him look stereotypically creative and mysterious, which is part of his personality. By-lines
