Fire Safety Unit Plan Monday Analyze the Learner: My class is a second grade classroom with eighteen students. Twelve students are white, and six are African American. There are ten boys and eight girls in this classroom. No one has a learning disability. Students are hands-on and visual learners. State the Objectives: Today, at the end of this lesson, students will be able to recognize warning sounds and symbols of a fire. Students will do so with a 100% degree of accuracy. Select the Method, Media, and Material: We will need a smoke detector so students can listen to the sound of a smoke detector. We will also need Video 1 from my Storytelling assignment. The video is titled, “Abbey’s Fire Safety through story telling.” I will also use giant flashcards. We will then proceed to look at more signs and symbols using Facebook. We will go under “Fire Safety Decals” on Facebook. We will need a worksheet found from Google Search of fire safety signs and symbols (I will provide). Students will also use Blogster. Utilize Media and Materials: I plan to let the students listen to the smoke detector three times so they really understand what that sound is. I plan to let the students watch the video two times. However, we will only be watching the part with the signs and symbols. I will pause the video and tell students what the signs and symbols are. We will then have a group discussion. We will look at symbols on Facebook for ten minutes. This will allow students to see real life pictures of fire signs instead of clip art. For homework, students will have to get on Facebook (we will create a Facebook in class so everyone has one) and upload a fire safety image to the class blog. Students can then upload the image to the class blog. I will show them how to do this in class but they may also

Fire Safety Unit Plan

Monday

Analyze the Learner:

My class is a second grade classroom with eighteen students. Twelve students are white, and six are African American. There are ten boys and eight girls in this classroom. No one has a learning disability. Students are hands-on and visual learners.

State the Objectives:

Today, at the end of this lesson, students will be able to recognize warning sounds and symbols of a fire. Students will do so with a 100% degree of accuracy.

Select the Method, Media, and Material:

We will need a smoke detector so students can listen to the sound of a smoke detector.

Utilize Media and Materials:

I plan to let the students listen to the smoke detector three times so they really understand what that sound is. I will show them how to do this in class but they may also use their parents help. Students will answer the questions on the worksheet concerning fire safety signs and symbols.

Require Learner Participation:

In the morning, students will listen to a smoke detector. Students will listen closely to how it sounds. I will then have the students demonstrate how a smoke detector sounds (make the sound of it). Later, students will watch my Youtube video. We will only watch the part on safety signs and symbols. I will hold giant flashcards up of fire safety signs and the students will tell me what that sign is. In the afternoon, I will log onto Facebook and view the images on “Fire Safety Decals.” I will use the discussion to help them understand each sign and symbol.

Evaluate and Revise:

I will examine student participation in our discussion and demonstration to analyze how well the students understood the smoke detector and signs and symbols. I will be able to answer questions and be able to help students fill in the information gaps on fire safety signs and symbols during our discussion.
