Students, just like you, all over the world have unique holidays, traditions, and ways of life just like we have here in the United States. Wouldn’t you like to learn how Christmas is celebrated in Mexico or what the Chinese New Year is really all about? And wouldn’t it be neat to talk to a student, your age, from a country that celebrates this?

By the end of this webquest you will have (2 weeks):

Skyped with a “pen-pal” from another country

Discovered some new information about holidays, traditions, cultures etc. from your pen pal

Created an engaging PowerPoint to share with your classmates to both introduce your pen-pal to us and share what you have learned about his or her country and/or culture

Gained a better understanding of what it means to be a digital citizen

2) If you do not already have a Skype, create an account

3) E-mail me with 3 different countries that you would like to have a pen-pal from and why you think it would be neat? Also include 2 facts that you learned from each video (8 total)

4) Once I receive your e-mail ,I will reply, in which I will assign you to a country and a pen-pal and give you your pen pal's Skype name so that you are able to friend them. DO NOT SKYPE THEM until I am with you to help set up the call.

6) During the Skype call•Introduce yourself (favorites, what you like to do)•Find 2 similarities and 2 differences about the both of you•Ask them about holidays and traditions (include info about food, dress, activities,) and take notes about the ones that interest you most

7) After you have collected the information you need, research 3 of the holidays or traditions that caught your eye the most. You will need to find at least 4 facts for each holiday

After have completing this webquest, you will have a better understanding of different cultures and what life is like for students just like you in another country. You may have learned about a holiday you never knew existed and understand the meaning of it. You will have also learned how to use websites and applications such as YouTube and Skype for learning purposes. Hopefully you found this lesson interesting and learned a lot from your pen-pal!
