What is mental illness?

•  Chemical imbalance!•  Something that inhibits you from living

your life!•  Separate from the actual person !•  An everyday struggle!•  A disorder that negatively impacts your

day-to-day activities!

Mental health vs. Mental illness?•  An action you can take to help with mental

illness (therapy, medication, coping strategies)!

•  Being aware and mindful of what you need!•  Acknowledging when you’re not at your best!•  We all have mental health and we need to

take care of ourselves !

What is Stigma?•  A false belief!•  A stereotype!•  A negative connotation!•  A negative stereotype!•  Assumptions!•  A gateway for people to judge others !•  A social construction !

How does stigma feel?

•  You feel isolated!•  Makes you feel like you can’t talk about it !•  Shameful!•  Heavy---like a burden!•  Painful!•  Character flaw, you’re a bad person !

What did you feel?Thoughts!•  Addresses the stigma and heightens heart rate in groups of people!•  Support system (mother) helps her cope!•  Medicine is helping her!•  Didn’t ask to be depressed—don’t choose to have depression !•  Had a defiant attitude; Not afraid of anything anymore!

Feelings!•  Sad!•  Empathy!•  Guilty for not understanding or sympathizing!•  validating feeling !•  Started at a young age; makes you feel emotional and think about who could be affected !•  Confused!

Thoughts!•  Thought it was a type of illness!•  The person and others don’t realize they have something wrong!•  Shows how crippling mental illness can be!•  comical in film but in real life it is problematic!

Feelings!•  didn’t feel shameful!•  anxiety!•  makes you appreciate the abilities you have!•  optimistic!

Insights!•  makes you think about how people with mental illness literally have their hands tied!•  can’t express themselves to those in their family!•  There’s hope because he was asking for help!•  Need to give in to release it!
