Being blunt....

• That wasn't very clever.

• What were you thinking of?

• I bet you wish you hadn't done that.

• Why on Earth did you go and do that?

• You made a right mess of that.

Being blunt...

• I wouldn't do that again (in a hurry).

• Oops…

• What a total disaster

• You put your foot in it (there)

• That was a bit uncalled for.

Being tactful...

You can soften your criticism by saying

things like:

• I’ve made the same mistake myself

or

• I would have done the same, but...

Being tactful...

If you have to point out a failure in

someone’s behaviour, be very careful in how

you express it. Don’t forget that the words

you use are only part of the message you

convey. Your tone of voice and speaking in

a polite, friendly, natural way can make a big

difference. Avoid speaking in a tone which

expresses, sarcasm, anger, hostility or

condescension.
