Create Your Own Satire Due: Thursday, May 7th

Counts as a TEST grade

Project Summary: In satire, negative human characteristics or vices are made fun of. We have just finished reading Animal Farm which was a satire about animals rebelling against the evil rule of humans. In this story the animals represent such vices as greed, naivety, stupidity, stubbornness, and gullibility. Now you and your group are going to create a satire video, and point out negative human qualities. Remember not all satires are supposed to be funny.

Directions: As a group of four or five, create a script in which you will explain what your film will be about. Explain what you will point out about human nature, how you will point this out, who will be in your video (characters), what your characters will say, where you will shoot your video, and whether it is an episode (story) or a news report. Your film should be no longer than 15 minutes.

Purpose: To further understand satire.

Due Dates: - The script should be done by the end of the period Thursday, April 30th.- Raw footage should be complete by Monday, May 4th.- The completed film is due Thursday, May 7th.- The viewing is on Friday, May 8th.

Roles: - Director – in charge of what will be filmed and where.- Cinematographer – cameraman, in charge of how everything within the film should look

and how it will be shot.- Performers - there should be 2 performers in a group of four or three performers in

groups of five. Performers are the primary actors in the film (you can still have other actors).

Audience: Your classmates, Mr. Callahan, and Ms. Durand

Focus Correction Areas: 1. Brings attention to a certain negative human behavior (30%)2. Writes with a clear focus (30%)

Page 2: Create Your Own Satire

3. Thorough explanation of a specific plan on how and when the video will be shot (30%)4. Correct spelling and grammar (10%)

Procedures: You can talk about human nature as far as behavior in Drury high school, behavior at

home, or just behavior from the world as a whole. Think about popular mind-numbing television shows or other media that people like to

watch and make fun of those people who watch it (ex: the bloody super-easy video game on The Onion)

Think of some ways you see students or teachers in the school behave that seem ridiculous, or that have no real goal. Or think about something students or teachers do that only harm themselves and others. (Ex: The students in my school always eat the popcorn chicken twice a week although it makes them very sick every time).

Then exaggerate that behavior. (Ex: The students eat the popcorn chicken wrap everyday, although many people have died from it).

Get many actors to pretend to follow this negative behavior that you are pointing out. You can make this video into an episode (where the story will progress from beginning

to end) or into a news clip (Like we saw in class on The Onion). Your goal is to make sure that the human characteristic that you make fun of in your

film can be easily understood by your classmates the day it is viewed.
