• Notes are in purple and underlined
8.15.17 Objective: I can distinguish between quantitative and qualitative observations
1. Make as many observations as you can of a candle.
2. Please be careful.3. You have 6 minutes.
8.15 Objective: I can distinguish between quantitative and qualitative observations
Types of Observations• Scientists make objective observations (without
opinion or bias) using their senses and instruments• Scientists avoid subjective observations (opinions)Ex (Objective): Matt has dark hair and brown eyes. Matt is 5’6”.Nonex (Subjective): Matt is cute. Matt is tall.
Explain why the example is an objective observation. Defend your reasoning with reference to notes.
This is an objective observation because ____
Explain why the nonexamples are subjective observations . Defend your reasoning with reference to notes.
This is a subjective observation because ____
you can see his hair and eye color
Types of Observations
Qualitative observations are not number based Ex. Jennifer Lawrence has blonde hair. Ex: Princess Kate is wearing blue.
Come up with your own qualitative observation about JLaw or the royal family.
Types of Observations
Quantitative observations use instruments and contain numbers Ex: JLaw is 5 ft 9 in tall. Ex: The royal baby weighed 8 lbs, 6 oz.
Come up with your own quantitative observations about JLaw or the royal family.
Qualitative or Quantitative
The temperature of the room increased by 8º Celsius.
This is a ________________ observation because ____________________8oC is a measured number
quantitative
Qualitative or Quantitative
The fireworks were loud.
This is a ________________ observation because ____________________loud describes a sound, and
there are no numbers
qualitative
Qualitative or Quantitative
The leaf veins are 3 mm wide.
This is a ________________ observation because ____________________3 mm is a measured number
quantitative
Qualitative or Quantitative
The rose has a sweet smell.

• For each observation, underline those that are quantitative
• Circle any qualitative observations
1.READ the description of a burning candle done by a chemist.
2.Compare your observations with those of a professional chemist. How
are they similar? How are they different?
3.What did the chemist do that you did not?
4.List at least THREE ways that you can improve your observations.
5. Annotate by highlighting qualitative observations and
quantitative observations with TWO different colors.
Write your answers at the BOTTOM of the page AND
