INTRODUCTION

This is a slide set for the beginning conversation with boards of directors intent on starting a new museum.

It should lead to sober reflection and skepticism followed by realistic assessment of all data.

Creating a new museum is difficult, expensive, time consuming and requires patience. The commitment needs to be deep and on-going. It is not for the feint of heart.

It is easier to stop at the beginning. Elaine Heumann Gurian 2008

Cautions

Do everything at once.Stop at any point and readjust all the documents to

match new data.Continually revise downward based on realistic

data.Do not use any optimistic data especially on

attendance figures.Do not place debt service into operating budget if it

can be helped. It is often the cause of long term failure.

Do not get “yes” people as consultants. Have all your ideas tested by candor.

DATA GATHERING

Gather: Everything that can be learned of citizens within one

hour drive time. Every statistic available about every attraction in one

hour drive time including staffing and operating budget.

Vigorously test salary structure and attendance income against current market place.
