Disposing of food waste in a landfill contributes to global warming. Every metric dry ton of food that goes to a landfill may generate .25 metric tons of methane in the first 120 days. Thus, composting this food waste would reduce emissions by the equivalent of up to 6 metric tons of CO2.

Background information

• Sustainability is when an item can be maintained for an indefinite amount of time without damaging the environment or without depleting a resource. That is, it is renewable. A way you can be sustainable is by composting. Composting involves substances that are biodegradable. If an object is biodegradable it means it can be absorbed into the earth and distribute harmless gasses. There are many different ways to compost.

The Experiment

• In this experiment, a worm compost will be utilized. A worm compost is a box, bin, or case that is filled with humus and red wiggler worms. The worms eat the food you put into the box and then the worms produce soil. Composting helps the environment and is one of the many ways to help turn this planet green.

• Plywood• Hingis• Nails• Trash bags• Humus• Red wigglier worms

Steps• 1 Buy the materials/Build the box• 2 Add trash bags to the box • 3 Pour humus and worms into the box• 4 Add paper and food to the compost and stir

What I learned

Through this experiment I learned that composting is a EASY and FUN way of “recycling”. Composting saves money as well, for example you don’t need to go out and buy soil or manure, also you are spending less money on trash bags.
