Research supervision
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
setting the scene: case study
• problem: – to supervise a relatively large number of pos-graduation students
enrolled in different pos-graduation programs• different needs, perceptions, expectations, competencies, …
• research questions:– how to use ICT for research supervision purposes?– what are the key success factor of online research supervision?
• methodology:– single descriptive and interpretative case study – CoTiques
• data gathering: – supervisor reflections– observation (ICT mediated)

tool activities
MSN share, negotiate and discuss ideas, peer-assessment
Skype/share •share, negotiate and discuss ideas, peer-assessment•prepare presentation•allow follow-up of presentations during face-to-face meeting•peer and supervisor assessment of written materials
GoogleDocs writing activities (articles)
setting the scene: ICT use
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
setting the scene: face-to-face
• face-to face meeting – once a month– present and discuss ongoing work– make connections (people, ideas, projects)– sense of community
• contact with experts– validation– increase relevance
• presentation at conference/seminar– commitment and ownership of research– develop oral communication skills– …
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
• Positive:– availability (night sessions, student-student and student-mentor)– online groups, peer support and feedback
• Negative:– supervision overload (to must students!? value of peers support)– Biblio – students insert only few items
• Disparate– content tools (suitable to share students doc but not biblio)– students attitudes (self-efficacy, independence) and conceptions– interaction through computer conferencing:
• amount of information/information retrieve;• text-based (thoughtful but time consuming);• participation (overloading/underwhelming).
factors affecting online supervision
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
research supervision: changes
Information society
Globalization/complexity/interdependence
New responsibilities for HE
Access to ICT
Research supervision
Postgraduate students / supervisors roles and
competencies
Online research supervision
Evaluation
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
quality factors of e-Learning
– feedback from students and peer (during students dissertations)– time complexion (one – one and a half year)– increase of research competencies, as well as digital literacy
good online research supervision
difficulties to manage CoP instability
final comments
Maria João LoureiroCIDTFF, DDTE, Universidade de Aveiro
• First step• Case study needs:
– further development (success factors)– students validation;– interaction analysis (validate perceptions)
• ICT use– Web 2.0 technologies
