Definition of Co-education
Co-education means the education
of boys and girls in same institute.
Historical BackgroundIt was first introduced in Switzerland, but now it has
become popular almost in all Europe and America.
Most of the countries in the world have adopted this
form of education.
Pakistan have adopted this system, but it remained
a controversial issue.
Greek Philosopher “PLATO” said,
that Co-education creates a feeling of comradeship. I
advocate teaching of both genders in the same
institution without showing any discrimination in
imparting education.
Hypothesis for Co-Education
If institute provides positive/proper environment for female students then number of female students are more likely to be join coeducation system.
If institute provides negative environment(like hooting & harassment) for female students then number of female students are less likely to be join coeducation system.
Need and Importance of Co-Education
When it is professional course
When students are mature
When students are observed under close supervision and guided to develop healthy relations.
Better understanding of gender issues
When there is proper academic environment.
Greater participation of both boys and girls in the development of good culture
More confidence in interpersonal discussions.

There are two supporting factor of co-education system

Sociological Factor
Economical Factor
Available infrastructure could be sufficient, No need to open separate universities on basis of gender
Good for under developed countries
Sociological Factor
Co-education provides a more realistic way of training young people to take their places naturally in the wider community of men and women
Co-education allow young people to express their views openly
Co-education eliminates gender based discrimination
Boys and girls gain social maturity through valuable interactive play and shared learning in co-education

Advantages of Co-Education
In co-education both the female and male perspectives will be explored in class discussions and this is a very important learning experience
Spirit of co-operation and healthy competition thrives in the co-educational system.
Both genders get equal opportunities
of learning.

Strong participation of girls:Girls at single-sex schools are no more likely than those at co-
ed schools to participate in class discussions.
89% of girls in independent co-ed schools ask questions or
contribute to class discussions compared with 87% of their
counterparts attending single-sex schools.
Girls in co-ed and single-sex schools report that they voice
an opinion regardless of peer approval in both environments
almost equally (66% co-ed, 67% single-sex).

According to Hadith
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “The best row for a man is the first row and the worst row for him is a last row. The best row for a women is last row and the worst row for a women is the first row.”
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “None of man should enter in the presence of women after this day unless she is accompanied by one or two other man”.
According to Hadith
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “Never enter in the company of women then,
A person asked Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) what about her male in law The Prophet(PBUH) replied “The male in law is the most dangerous”.
Why Co-Education Is Criticized?
Conservative people criticize the system of co-education.
According to them, this system is against our traditions.
They fear that co-education will develop immoral relationships between boys & girls.
They believe that this system will be spoil both the boys & girls.
But these arguments do not hold much water.
Co-Education and limitations of Islam
Islam is not against the coeducation if Islamic values be kept in mind
Girls are covers themselves (hijab)
Interaction with others while remaining limits.
Do not abuse the freedom of their parents.
