Article: A, An And The are called article. It qualifies Noun.

Indefinite Definite

Indefinite Article: A and An are called Indefinite Article. For example:

He bought a book

The boy eats an egg.

Uses of A and An A is used before the word starting with consonant and an

sits before the word starting with vowel(a, e, i, o, u). For example:

a hen

a boy

a pen

an apple

If the consonant ‘h’ of any word is pronounced, article ‘a’ sits before it. For example:

This is a horse

He is a historian

If ‘h’ is not pronounced, article ‘an’ sits before it. For example:

He is an honest man. I have been reading for an hour

If the vowels in the beginning of the words are pronounced like ‘u’, article ‘a’ sits before them.

It is a ewe.

Generally article ‘an’ is used before the vowel ‘o’ if it is pronounced like o

1. Before singular common noun:

Before one person or one thing:

‘a’ sits before lot, little, few:

He earns a lot of money.

There is a little water in the glass.

There are a few apples on the table.

‘a’ sits before- couple, dozen, score, hundred, thousand, million:

i. They sold a dozen pens.

He earns a hundred taka a day.

ii. A million of people attended the meeting.

‘a’ sits before exclamatory words like ‘what’, ‘how’ , ‘such’ etc.
