Sample dialogue: Ji-hye and Cheol-su visit Namwon

In this dialogue, Ji-hye and Cheol-su explore the Garden of Gwanghanlu (광한루원), where Chunhyang and Lee Mong-ryeong fell in love (사랑에 빠졌습니다). Let’s listen!

Ji-hye: I’m really enjoying our trip to Namwon (남원)!

Cheol-su: Me too! I’m looking forward to visiting the Garden of Gwanghanlu (광한루원).

Ji-hye: Well, here we are! Let’s have a look around the garden.

Cheol-su: Look! It’s a pavilion! Is that the pavilion of Gwanghanlu, where Lee Mong-ryeong fell in love with Chunhyang?

Ji-hye: No, it’s a different pavilion. If we walk further, we’ll arrive at the pavilion of Gwanghanlu.

Cheol-su: This stone bridge looks interesting!

Ji-hye: Yes, it does. It’s called Ojakgyo Bridge (오작교). In the Song of Chunhyang (춘향가), Lee Mong-ryeong says that he likes Ojakgyo Bridge.

Cheol-su: Let’s walk across Ojakgyo Bridge. Look! There are lots of carp in the lake (호수)! Maybe they want food.

Ji-hye: It’s so beautiful here! Look at the little islands in the lake! I’ve never seen such a beautiful garden before.

Cheol-su: Look, Ji-hye! It’s the pavilion of Gwanghanlu!

Ji-hye: That’s right. This is where the story of Chunhyang began. Lee Mong-ryeong was visiting Gwanghanlu with his servant, Bangja, when he fell in love with Chunhyang.

Cheol-su: What was Chunhyang doing when Lee Mong-ryeong saw her?

Ji-hye: She was swinging.

Cheol-su: I saw some tall swings (그네) near the entrance. Maybe we can go on a swing.

Ji-hye: That’s a good idea, but there’s something else that I want to do first.

Cheolsu: What’s that?

Ji-hye: I’d like to visit Wolmae’s cottage (시골집).

Cheol-su: Good idea! Let’s go!
