shack to meet Sam. There, Tim also meets not just Sam, but also
Betsy.

ch.2-3ch.2-3When Tim was talking with Sam, Tim realized that Sam had stolen his
father’s Brown Bess. Sam got worried about Tim telling his father about Sam still being in the
town, so he made Tim to vow to never tell his
father about it. Though Tim felt uncomfortable,
he agreed.

ch. 3-1A man came to the tavern and blurted out insults about King
George, not realizing that Redding was a Tory country. Tim’s father got mad at the stranger, so he threw the stranger out the tavern.
Ch.3-2Betsy came to Tim’s house to get some beer. As she went
out of the house after getting some bear, Tim followed her.
Betsy talked to Tim in a serious way, making him to promise that he would never tell his
father if Sam came back for a visit.
ch. 3-3Two weeks passed since Betsy made Tim to promise her that
he would keep it a secret if Sam came back. Betsy came to Tim’s house once again, asking for beer. Then, Betsy secretly nodded at Tim; and Tim realized that Sam was
finally back.

Ch. 4-1The Rebel troops came to the tavern, and requested
Tim’s father to hand over his Brown Bess. Tim’s father
kept saying that he does not have his Brown Bess with
him, but the Rebel troops did not believe him. So, the
leader of the troop raised his sword and whiped the flat
side of the blade across ife’s face.
Ch. 4-2At the fear that his father
would be killed, Tim quickly ran to Tom Warrup’s shack, which was the place where
Sam was. Tim carefully tried to steal the Brown Bess while Sam was sleeping, but Sam
eventually woke up. Surprised, Tim pretend to shoot Sam with the Brown
Bess.
Ch. 4-3Tim asked Sam to come to home for a quick moment to check if their parents were alright. However,
they did not expect their father to see Sam.

Ch. 5-1One morning, Mr. Heron, who was a
surveyor and a Tory, came to the tavern. Mr. Heron asked Tim to be a messenger for
him.
Ch. 5-2Life disagreed at the idea of Tim
being a messenger of Mr. Heron. Life
did not want Tim to be involved in the war too.
Ch. 5-3Tim wanted to be the messenger.
Then, he got an idea when Jerry Sanford asked him to go out
with him to catch shad. It was a great excuse to get away
from Life.

However, after she read what the message said, she just
threw the message away. The message had only one

reliable.”

Ch. 7-1Tim’s parents fought over Sam’s letters. When Sam
sent his first letter, his mom wanted to answer it but Life did not give in; he did not want his wife to reply it. However, on his second
letter, Sam’s mother decided to send a response no matter what his husband
told her.
Ch. 7-2Life decided to go to
Verplancks Point with Tim. They had to drive cattle to Verplancks Point and
sell them to buy supplies for the tavern and the store. However, when
they reached Ridgebury, there was a problem.
Ch. 7-3In Ridgebury, Tim and his father met cowboys who claimed that they were
patriots. They tried to steal the cattle because they did not want the cattle to go to
the English troops. One of the cowboy harmed Life a little with his sword, but Tim and
his father was soon saved by some of the Loyalists.

Ch. 8-1Tim and his father went to their cousin’s house for a stay. Tim’s cousin, Ezekiel Platt took Tim
out to the barn and talked together. They talked about what
side they were going to take if they could (both replied the
British, although Tim was not sure of his mind), and had a
conversation about who would win the war.
Ch. 8-2When Tim and his father was
coming back from the Verplancks Point, heavy
snow was falling from the sky. This was not very
pleasant for Tim and Life because they became very
cold.
Ch. 8-3Because of the snow, they had to stop and spend the night at the Platt’s (their
cousin’s). Tim felt pleasant when he got into the house, for he was finally out of the cold. Tim and his cousins
slept by the kitchen fire that night.

Ch.9-1Life was concerned
about Tim being hurt by the
cowboys, so he decided to ride
ahead and make Tim to work with the oxen behind.
Ch.9-2Tim realized that Life did not come back to him for a while, so he
got worried. Tim decided to follow
Grey’s tracks in the snow, and figured that the cowboys
jumped Life, and took him away
somewhere.
Ch.9-3A while later, the
cowboys found Tim. Tim had an idea to
trick them; He pretended that there
were going to be escorts coming soon.
The cowboys got afraid and ran away.

Ch. 10-1Tim came back to the tavern by himself and told his mom the story. Tim acted different now that he lost his father.
He was the only man in the family, and he felt that he needed to be
more mature.
Ch.10-2The British Troops came to Redding. Tim and a
soldier talked for a while. The soldier told
Tim that he wanted to go back to his hometown, Dublin. However, an officer intruded their conversation after a
while.
Ch.10-3Because a Rebel
messenger got shot, Tim tried to go to Dr. Hobart’s house for help. However, while he was going, he
saw the British Troop and the Rebels fighting; They shot guns at each other. Later, a British soldier pulled out a sword and cut Ned’s head. At that moment, Tim did not
want to be a Tory.

knew where he was.

Sam said it was his duty to his country is the most
important. However, Tim knew that Sam was just
staying in the army because he liked the excitement of it.

Ch. 12-1The Meekers found out
that Life died on the prison ship. Betsy came to visit, and Betsy and Tim
talked. Betsy said that she does not care who wins anymore, and that she
just wants the war to be over.
Ch. 12-2Sam kept on saying that Tim should butcher the cattle soon, or else the hungry soldiers might
steal them and eat them. Sam also confessed that he had stolen cattle once,
because of the severe hunger.
Ch. 12-3Some soldiers were trying
to steal the Meekers’ cattle, so Sam chased
after them to catch them. However, they beat Sam up and accused him as
the cattle thief. Sam told Tim to call Colonel
Parsons, crying.

Ch. 13-1Tim went to Colonel Parsons to say that Sam was innocent. However, Colonel
Parsons just shrugged and said that it is up to General Putnam to
decide what would happen to Sam.
Ch. 13-2Colonel Read came to the tavern to tell Tim and his mother that the situation is going bad for Sam. The people who accused Sam as the cattle thief were convincing, and the fact that Sam came from a
Tory family would not be good.
Ch. 13-3Tim went to see General Putnam to say that Sam was innocent. General Putnam said that he
would consider it, and allowed Tim to visit Sam who was in the prison. Sam talked with Tim
through the hole of the fence, and they -or
maybe just Sam- even joked a little.

Ch. 14-1Tim was talking to his
mom because he knew that both of them would not sleep well that night. When Mother said things that seemed like she was giving up on Sam, Tim got a bayonet ready and said that he would save Sam.
Mother told Tim not to go, but Tim did not listen to
his mother and left.
Ch. 14-2Tim went to where Sam
was, and threw the bayonet he had to give
the bayonet to Sam. Some people, probably
the guards, chased after Tim. Tim ran for his life, and the guards could not chase Tim all the
way through. As a result, Tim could safely
arrive home.
Ch. 14-3At last, it was the day of execution. Tim’s mother
refused to go to the execution, but Tim knew
that Sam wanted somebody to come and see him, so he went to the execution. Sam
was wearing a kind of a mask, and he was shot. His clothes were on fire, and he was jerking; but he stopped jerking when he was shot
again by the soldier.
