Objectiveto capture, most importantly, the opponent’s

king, or his pieces as the game goes on to weaker his offense and defense

to protect own pieces, first the king, then the next valuable pieces for your strategy, which usually includes the queen…

pawns are often used as sacrifice and are seen of low-value but it maybe life-saving after it reaches the opposite end of the board where it can be exchanged with any piece of the same color, except for the king

Rules

White starts the game

Then black makes the move

From then on, players alternate turns until game ends

End of the Game

>when a king is captured or

>when a player resigns from the game or

>when the game is a draw

Game is a Draw

>by mutual consent

>because of inadequate forces

>50-move law

>repetition

>perpetual check

MUTUAL CONSENT

called when players feel the play would lead to nothing but draw, and it would just be a waste of time and energy to continue playing

INADEQUATE FORCE

called when neither player has enough pieces with which to mate, like when all that’s left are kings

50-move law

requires that in the next 50 moves, the other player must either mate or show some tangible proof (making a capture or moving a pawn or forcing a pawn-move

on the part of one’s opponent) that he has made headway

Repetition

called if same position is reached 3 times(no other move except the one he’s making repeatedly)

Perpetual Check

series of checks for a draw

Special MovesCheckmatewhen the king is in check and there’s no

possible way to escape from being check, his side lost the game

Castlingdone to hide king in a safer place or create

opening for the pieces

can only be done if

neither king or rook has previously made a move

squares between them are not occupied

En Passant“in passing”

When pawn advances two squares on its first move and lands next to opponent’s pawn that is on an adjacent file and the same horizontal row, the opponent’s pawn may capture it as if it had advanced only one square

8th rank pawnwhen pawn reaches the 8th rank, or the

opponents side of the board, it may be promoted to any piece except the king…if it is promoted to a queen, the move is called queening/promotion
