About the Program

In Australia, disability support and aged care courses are in high demand and the graduates of Certificate III in Individual Support Course will be qualified to work in both segments. Once completed, students can continue to study further units, i.e. Certificate IV or Diploma in either disability support or aged care

Course Purpose

•The course is designed for workers in the community and residential setting

•Workers provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing/disability

•They follow a personalised care plan. They can use their discretion and judgement in delivering appropriate care as required

Accommodation Support Worker

•Work in the community and/or residential facilities

•Carry out activities to maintain personal care and/or other activities for people with a disability

•Undertake activities related to an individualized plan, and report directly to a supervisor

Possible Job Outcome Personal Care Assistant

•Work for private clients, home health providers or agencies that offer services to senior citizens and the disabled

•Work in private homes or care facilities to help clients with day to day tasks, such as bathing, grooming etc

•Site visits before enrolling patient

•Ensure nurses report clinical updates to the field supervisors /Nursing officer/Physician

•Responsible for checking documentation of nurses and taking corrective actions wherever they come across anomaly

•Responsible for on the job training of nurses

•Assisting the family members to enable a person with developmental disabilities to stay at home

•Providing appropriate care and supervision to protect that person's safety in the absence of a family member

•Work within the aged care team to promote the delivery of quality care to residents and their families

•Assist in the provision of care services that enhances the resident’s well-being

(Their physical, psychological, social and spiritual qualities as well as the improvement in social engagement and quality of life)

•Provide for patient’s personal hygiene by giving bedpans, urinals, baths etc.

•Assist in performing daily activities for the well-being of the patient

•Report patient related observations to nursing supervisor

•Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records

• Aid clients in their own home and allow them to function more safely and independently

•Assist clients with personal hygiene and day to day activities

•Assure that all medication is administered, following the current procedures

•Hired by public or private health care providers to assist in the daily care of elderly or disabled individuals

•Duties may include housekeeping, cooking and transportation as well as regulating medications and training family members on proper bedside care

Disability Service Officer •Responsible for supporting individuals living with disability to fully participate and be engaged in all aspects of their life both in home and their chosen community

•Assist individuals to be as independent as possible by providing high quality support

•Tasks may include meal preparation, domestic work, personal care work and social support

•Assure that all medication is administered following the current procedures

•Ensure that all key events/changes are reported to the coordinator immediately

Course Details

•Students may undertake this course as an entry pathway into the aged care or disabled care industry.

•Delivery mode: Face to face/ Blended Delivery

•Course duration: Maximum of 26 weeks, with 160 hours of practical placement

•Assessments: Knowledge based tests, Simulation based assessments, Practical placement book, Workplace competency record
