Slap bass is the use of two or more fingers, where the player uses the thumb to strike a string then using another finger to pluck another string.Seen in rock and jazz. Influenced by old jazz music and fretless basses and bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

A very Difficult play style where there are no frets which can lead to notes being flat or sharp if they player is unsure of how to play.Seen most commonly in jazz.

Grunge is when you play a bass on a dropped scale and a medium amount of gain to get this dirty metal on metal sound. From the string sticking the frets.Seen in most modern metal. Influenced by bands like Korn.

-Harmonic play is the use of more than one string to create two notes of the same note on different pitches-Heard sparsely in music, not a technique not heard everydayInfluenced by jazz players.

Fretting is a coverage of a lot of basic techniques put together into one for example-Hammer on (to “hammer a finger to a different note so there will be no pluck)-Slide (sliding from one not to another)-Wa bend (bending a string to change tone)Used in almost every style of music

Palm muting is a technique where the player uses his plucking hand’s palm to “mute” the strings. This gives the sound this muffled sound. But can also be a way to mute the other strings so that only 1 string makes sound.

Used in every genre of music.

Picking is a playing style where the player uses a pick and what pick you use is all upon preference and what sound you want.Seen in all genres.

All these styles helped shape and form what modern basses we see today. With the large variety of choices for the large variety of music there is out there. From what pickups to the pickup setup.
