Energy From the Sun• Sun Give of Electromagnetic Radiation =

Energy that is given off in Waves• Ex. Ultraviolet Light = Sun Burn• Energy for the sun = Nuclear Fusion

in the core… • Small nuclei combine with other small

nuclei making a massive nuclei & releasing lots of energy

Page 3: Ch 26-1 The sun

Fusion Reaction

•Deuterium-deuterium reactions - Two deuterium atoms combine to form a helium-3 atom and a

neutron.

Forces in Balance

• The sun is stable because of two forces

• The pressure of nuclear fusion pushing outward

• The force of gravity pulling inward

Page 6: Ch 26-1 The sun

Atmosphere

• Sun’s Atmosphere is made up of 3 layer

• Photosphere = Inner layer of atmosphere—

• The visible surface of the sun—

• Has a bubbly appearance called Granules

Page 7: Ch 26-1 The sun

Chromosphere• Chromosphere =

Middle layer of atmosphere—

• Name = sphere of color can be seen when photosphere is blocked

Page 8: Ch 26-1 The sun

Corona• Corona = Outer layer of atmosphere

—• Gasses in layer a very hot 1million

Kelvins—• Beginning of solar winds = charged

particle that flow out from the Corona—

• Earth magnetic field deflects cause the auroras

Features

• Sunspots = Areas of gas in the photosphere that are cooler than surrounding gases

• Prominences = are huge loops of gas that erupt from sunspot regions

• Solar Flares = a sudden release of energy from sun
