History of Facebook Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg. A student at

Harvard University. It was launched on February 4th 2004. It was originally intended for Harvard university students

to easily network and communicate with one another. It was then expanded to other universities across the Boston area.

Since 2006 it has been available to all people with an email address.

As of October 2007 Facebook grew to over 42 million active members throughout the world. Projections point to over 60 million users by the end of this year alone.

In one year from September 2006 to September 2007 Facebook’s ranking among most visited websites jumped from 60th to 7th place.
