The presentation aimed to raise awareness of the seriousness of the water scarcity issues in the region and about the urgent needs and commitments for regular assessment and monitoring of the current status of water-use efficiency in order to identify practical ways of improving water-use efficiency at the farm levels, as well as in the agriculture sector as a large domain, with a focus at participatory approaches.

The presentation tackled issues such as the challenges of water scarcity in agriculture

Conceptual issues in water productivity and water-use efficiency, and country-specific experiences with a focus on policies enacted, innovations introduced, good practices, and improving on-farm water use efficiency with the active participation of stakeholders.

The water accounting methodology is based on a water balance approach.

Water balances consider inflow and outflow from field.

Water accounting components at field are inflow, storage change, process depletion, non-process depletion and outflow.

Drainage outflows are often not measured, as more emphasis has been placed on knowledge of inflows to irrigation systems.

DF net = Depletion / Net flow

DF gross = Depletion / Gross flow

DF available= Depletion / Available

Depleted Fraction (DF) is that part of the inflow that is depleted by both process and non-process uses. Depleted fraction can be defined in terms of net, gross, and available water.

Productivity of water can be measured against gross or net inflow, depleted water, or process depleted water.

Productivity of water has a boarder basis than water use efficiency.

Productivity of Water (PW) can either be related to the physical mass of production or the economic value of produce per unit volume of water.

Page 10: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

PW inflow = Production / Inflow

PW depleted = Production / Depletion

PW process = Production / Available

There is a clear difference between 1 kg of wheat and 1 kg of rice produced per mm of water depleted within the same crop rotation

Page 12: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

There is a clear difference between 1 kg of sugar beet/faba bean and 1 kg of clover produced per mm of water depleted within the same crop rotation

Page 13: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

Net inflow and depletion in prevailing crop rotation system are 3765 mm and 2291 mm respectively, which are higher than that of the corresponding figures (3040 mm and 2182 mm respectively) in intercropping rotation.

Page 14: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

The gross and net depletion fractions (DF) are 0.71 and 0.70 higher in the proposed crop rotation compared with prevailing crop rotation.

Page 15: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

Net inflow of rice was 1520 mm greater wheat in prevailing crop rotation than sugar beet /faba bean; maize/ tomato in proposed crop rotation

Page 16: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

Total outflow was higher in prevailing crop than proposed crop rotation (1323vs. 775 mm)

Page 17: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

The proposed crop rotation has the highest total production, about US$19.801 ha-1 compared with US$4.462 ha-1 for a prevailing crop rotation. So, Rotation of intercropping consistently provides higher profit than prevailing crop rotation

Page 18: Can we able to enhance water productivity under Water scarcity?, Dr. Alaa. Z. El Bably

So, we got a higher total production for our water with rotation of intercropping , and used its limited water more efficiently than prevailing crop rotation.

Therefore, when water is becoming a limiting factor for agriculture, a systems performance indicator rather than a crop performance indicator is needed to determine the optimum crop rotation, water allocation among those crops, and ultimate net return of the cropping system should be.

The answer is

Yes, we can able to enhance water productivity and improve performance indicators under water scarcity

based on: addressing water balance, crop intensification and economics
