TEACHING STUDENTS TO FISH: USING A FLIPPED CLASSROOM MODEL TO
ENHANCE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN THE ADULT LEARNER
CAEYC 2014
STELLA BAKER, LIBRARIAN & DONNA GREENE, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
COLLEGE OF THE DESERT
REMEMBER THIS? If you are as old as I am, you remember searching through the stacks for research articles! Imagine the wonder of having all that research at your finger tips! When I first began teaching, digital resources for journal articles were hard to find. So, I did not require my students to look up and find journal articles. I used the annual editions, provided them with summaries of journal articles and/or found the articles myself and introduced students to the concept of peer-review and what it meant.
No longer! My students now have full access to peer-reviewed journal articles at the touch of a button. I can assign a research paper in every class.
BIG PROBLEM!
• MY STUDENTS DON’T KNOW HOW TO FIND, CHOOSE AND EVALUATE THE PEER-REVIEWED LITERATURE.
• ENTER STELLA! SHE CAME TO OUR DIVISION MEETING TO DISCUSS THIS NEW THING SHE WAS DOING CALLED A LIB GUIDE. I APPROACHED HER AND ASKED IF SHE COULD DO ONE FOR MY CLASS. I WAS TEACHING INFANT AND TODDLER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT AND THEN INFANT AND TODDLER CARE: HERE IS THE LIB GUIDE FOR THAT CLASS

• LIB GUIDES HELP THE INSTRUCTOR BY:
• PROVIDING INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS IN HOW TO USE AND ACCESS DIGITAL MATERIALS
• FORCE THE STUDENTS TO BEGIN CRITICALLY ANALYZING INFORMATION
• HELP WITH BUILDING COURSE MATERIALS FROM A PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIAN
• LIB GUIDES ENABLE MY STUDENTS TO:
• ACCESS THE LIBRARY RESOURCES THEY NEED 24/7
• GET SPECIFIC JOURNAL ARTICLES, BOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN VETTED
• CONTINUE ACCESS TO THOSE RESOURCES AFTER MY CLASS IS COMPLETED
