LinkedIn Profile Development Checklist Printer-friendly versionLinkedIn is an effective tool to network with others virtually.  In order to allow people to find a mutual connection, you need a profile that will help employers find you and entice them to contact you once they view your profile.  Use this checklist as a guide to optimize your visibility and showcase your best work.BENEFITS

•Up to 85% of employers use online tools to research candidates before or after an interview.•A great way to develop a professional identity and conduct a passive job search.

•Search Engine Optimization – Allow others to find you and manage what you want them to see online.•Support your traditional job search documents. Share your blogs, tweets and more.•Identify your 2nd degree connections.PHOTO/HEADSHOT*

•Should be professional and close up on your face.•Not required, but strongly suggested.HEADLINE

• The default setting is your most recent job title. You should edit this to reflect an interesting brand statement that will catch attention.RECOMMENDATIONS

•Ideal to have 1-2 recommendations for each of your most recent work/project experiences.•When requesting a recommendation, your recommender must be a LinkedIn member.•Customize the recommendation request to share why you are looking for a recommendation and what you would specifically like them to highlight. This will help each recommendation cover different aspects of your skills and qualifications.CONNECTIONS

•In general, connections should only be made with people you have a personal relationship with. Ideally, one of you will be able to recommend the other for networking or job opportunities.•Always customize connection requests. This adds a personal touch and will remind the person who you are.•Begin by connecting with family and friends. The more 1st degree connections you have, the more helpful your 2nd degree connections will be.•Connect with classmates, professors, staff members. Also connect with employers and colleagues at internships.•Continue to maintain your LinkedIn connections. As you meet new people at networking events or future jobs, connect with them right away. WEBSITES

•Great place to link to blogs, websites or other supplemental websites. You should change the default title “Website” to the specific name of the website such as “John Smith Twitter Account”.PUBLIC PROFILE URL

•Always update the Public Profile URL to your name and add your LinkedIn URL to your resume.SUMMARY*

•Create a professional summary written in the first person. Focus on answering three main questions: (1) Who are you professionally? (2) What do you do or want to do? (3) Why are you unique? What are your skills and specialties?  Be sure to include keywords for your industry as well as your contact information (e.g., email address).•Review job descriptions for keywords to include.SPECIALTIES

•Add industry and technical terms that relate to your field(s) of interest. This is a great section to also focus on keywords that may be used when employers are conducting searches on LinkedIn. View other professionals’ profiles as well as the Skills tool to get more ideas.EXPERIENCE*

•Post at least three recent positions. Be sure to include volunteer positions, internships, and jobs.•Under each position, list the 1-2 most important bullets from your resume. Then, add 1-2 that you didn’t have space to include on your resume. This helps ensure that someone who has seen your resume is finding supplemental information on your LinkedIn profile.•Use bullet points for easy scanning and start your bullets with action verbs. The CCE website has an Action Verbs tipsheet to help you find strong, varying verbs to use in your experience.  EDUCATION*

• Include all education as well as honors, awards, activities, significant projects, relevant courses, and/or other highlights.APPLICATIONS

•Use SlideShare to post past presentation materials, writing samples, portfolios or other industry related materials to highlight your work. Be sure to use watermarks over portfolios or other information that you want to remain proprietary.•Other applications allow you to post your resume on your LinkedIn profile, feed your Twitter activity (if professional), showcase your blog posts, share a creative portfolio, broadcast where you are traveling for work, to name a few. These applications are great for strengthening your brand.GROUPS & ASSOCIATIONS

•A free account user can join up to 50 groups.  You can rearrange the order of your groups or hide the visibility.•Join both professional and social groups to highlight your interests. Columbia/Alumni Groups: Columbia Career Connections, Columbia Alumni Association NetworkProfessional Organization Groups: National Association of Mechanical Engineers, Professional WritersSpecial Interest Groups: Yankees Fan, BikingADDITIONAL INFORMATIONSKILLS*

•Use to check out pertinent skills for your industry, find professionals in your field, find groups and companies in your industry, to name a few.CONTACT INFO

•Gives you a chance to list your contact information (e.g., email and phone number) as well as to specify how you want to be contacted. Select all contact categories (job opportunities, reconnecting etc.). This will open you to all possibilities. We suggest that you leave all categories selected even when you find the job of your dreams. This way, if you ever decide to change jobs in the future, you won’t need to worry about your current employer seeing this information.SECTIONS Note that you can reorder the sections on your profile and can add sections that are not part of the standard template. For example, if you are a student, you may want your education to come first after your Summary section. Furthermore, you may want to highlight a specific class project under a “Projects” section to showcase industry-level skills and teamwork abilities to a prospective employer.•Certifications•Courses•Honors and Awards•Languages•Organizations•Projects•Patents•Publications•Test Scores

The road ahead …. aka . . . what could be?

Page 23: Bruce Rutley PhD PAg Centre for Research & Innovation Presentation

I came to understand that: • organizations are made up

of groups of people; and that

• groups are made up of individuals –

• nurture the individual and the group will be strong;

• nurture the group and the organization will be strong. (2007)
