People voted for Sessions as a result of his … (a) enthusiasm 3. Michael Sessions is especially interested in … (c) going out and meeting people 4. Peter Beck's attitude can be described as … (c) humorous

2. Decide whether the sentences are true or false. Find evidence in the text to support your answers. 1. Michael's parents helped finance his campaign. False. "Sessions ran a low-profile campaign, which he financed with the $700 he had earned from a summer job." (lines 7-8). 2. Michael's bedroom will be his office. True." … Michael will be running the town from his bedroom." (lines 16-17). 3. Michael's teacher was impressed by his ambition. True. "He was a real go-getter during his campaign, he acted like he was running for president." (lines 25-26). 4. Before making a decision, Michael always studied the facts. True." … Michael had researched issues carefully before taking a position … " (lines 27-28). 5. Michael will have to leave school to become mayor. False." … Michael will still have to combine his new job with his studies." (lines 30-31)

3 Answer the questions. 1. What was Michael's main disadvantage while he was campaigning? Michael's main disadvantage while he was campaigning was that people were surprised by his young age. 2. What does Michael's principal warn him about? Michael's principal warns him that he (Michael) will have to finish his schoolwork even if he is the mayor of the town.

4 Making Inferences: Read lines 19- 20 again. What conclusions can you draw from Michael's statement? Choose the correct answer below. 1. The former mayor didn't use to talk much to the people of Hillsdale. The former mayor didn't use to talk much to the people of Hillsdale. Michael says that as mayor, he intends to stay in contact with the people of Hillsdale (lines 21-22). We can assume that he is telling people how he plans to improve things and be different from the former mayor. 2. The former mayor was in contact with the people of Hillsdale.

Page 4: Bridges 2 Unit 2

In addition, if the other mayor had been very communicative, Michael would not need to explain that he feels this is what a mayor should do (lines 19-20). We can therefore infer that statement 1 is correct.

5 Find words or expressions in the text which mean the same as: 1. previous (paragraph I) former 2. job (paragraph III) position 3. obvious (paragraph III) clear 4. topics (paragraph IV) issues 5. integrate (paragraph V) combine

Use the words below. researching • earned • warning caused • task • suspend • aims A high-school student has won the Hillsdale, Michigan municipal elections for mayor and this has (1) CAUSED a lot of excitement in the small town. Eighteen-year-old Michael Sessions, who used money that he had (2) EARNED from a summer job to finance his low-profile campaign, said that his (3) AIMS were to attract money and jobs to the town. As mayor, his primary (4) TASK is to preside over the town council, but Sessions said that it was also important for him to go out and meet people. His teacher praised him for (5) RESEARCHING issues carefully before taking a position. GRAMMAR Read the quote and newspaper extract. Then answer the questions. "In my opinion, Michael Sessions is much too young to run the town. What qualifications does he have? Does he have any experience? I don't think he will do a good job here in the next four years.".

HILLSDALE TIMES

RESIDENT SPEAKS UP One local resident, Mrs Grace O'Brien, said that in her opinion Michael Sessions was much too young to run the town. She asked what qualifications

he had and whether he had any experience. She added that she didn't think he would do a good job there in the following four years. 1. Look at the verbs in bold in the quote and newspaper extract. How do the verb forms change in reported speech? In reported speech, we move the verbs back in time (because time has gone by since the moment the words were spoken). 2. Find two reported questions. She asked what qualifications he had and whether he had any experience. When reporting a question, main verbs also move back in time, but the verb in the reported question no longer has an interrogative structure because a reported question is no longer a question. How are they different? When reporting a wh– question we use the same interrogative pronoun as in the direct question. When reporting a yes/no question we begin the reported question with the words if or whether. 3. Look at the words here and next in the quote. How do they change in reported speech? Here becomes there and next becomes the following. Time and place words also change in reported speech because time has gone by since the moment the words are spoken and because the place where words are reported may also be different. I recommend that you revise thoroughly the teacher's Grammar Notes. The Grammar Appendix (page 107) is useful, but incomplete.
