BMJ Best Practice

• A decision-support tool designed for use at point of care

• Combines the latest research evidence, guidelines and expert opinion - covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis

• Incorporates BMJ Clinical Evidence – summarises the current state of knowledge about the prevention and treatment of clinical conditions, based on searches and appraisal of the literature

How to Access

• latrobe.edu.au/library

• Select the Databases tab

• Select ‘B’ from the A-Z list

Searching

• There are two ways to locate information:

• Browsing listed topics (Show conditions)

• Entering terms into the search box

• Click on the ‘Show conditions’ tab to browse information on the management of a patient with this condition

• You can also access Assessment and Overview topics from this tab

• Topics are structured into sections, based around the patient consultation

BMJ Clinical Evidence• Under ‘Treatment’ click on ‘Evidence’ to view information from BMJ

Search tips - search box

• Assumes the word ‘AND’ between each keyword

• Use AND, OR, NOT to refine or broaden your search. A maximum of two terms are recommended

• To search for a phrase put terms in quotes, e.g. “back pain”

• By default, various stems of words are searched, e.g. ‘exercise’ will also find ‘exercises’, ‘exercising’

• Search terms are automatically mapped to MeSH and topic synonyms, e.g. ‘acetaminophen’ will also find results for ‘paracetamol’

• Search results are tabbed by content type (e.g. Treatment, Evidence)

• Results for known conditions or symptoms are ranked by relevance
