Man Dies from Puffer Fish Poisoning June 15, 2009

One afternoon a 31 year old male, Andrew Marcus, was at a BBQ with his friends. He brought over the puffer fish he caught earlier that morning for the exotic menu. Andrew was the first to try, and right away the symptoms starting showing: numbness in his lips, tough, face and neck; nausea and severe vomiting; difficulty talking; difficulty breathing; and showed signs of paralysis in his upper body.

The hospital was called immediately and he was rushed there in an ambulance. Unfortunately, Andrew didn’t make it to the hospital and died on the way. The autopsy report showed that he had been a victim of tetrodotoxin poisoning, from eating the poisonous puffer fish.

Tetrodotoxin– How It Kills

• Normally in our nerve cells in order to send an impulse form one nerve to another, the cell sending the impulse has to be depolarized– caused by of the surplus uptake

of Na+ ions. – This depolarization will send the

impulse further down the axon of the nerve. Eventually getting to the adjacent cell.

Tetrodotoxin– How It Kills cont…

• Tetrodotoxin when introduced to the body will bind to the sodium ion channels in the nerve cells in that specific area and will spread.

• When it binds to the channels it prevents the uptake of Na+ ions so it can’t depolarize. • With out the cell be depolarized no signal can be sent---

ultimately the victim can’t do anything in that specific section

• Causing paralysis and death.

Santerodox– How It Works• After Santerodox it ingested, it dissolves

fast for instant relief and pinpoints where in the body the Tetrodotoxin is present.

• The Santerodox will then attach it self to the Tetrodotoxin molecules and release them from of the sodium ion channels.– Allowing more impulses to be sent from that

area, stopping and reversing the paralysis.

• Once attached to the poison the Santerodox can be easily broken down in the liver—no harm.
