WP5: Creative applications for the re-use of cultural resources
• System that use Europeana data to create virtual exhibitions and cultural
tourist routes
• Create a Semantic Multimedia Content Management System
Structuralist and Constructionist Approaches
Structuralist
• Originated from the analysis of folktales: Propp, 1928 Morphology of the Folktale
• Researchers have developed formal and computational frameworks for the
analysis, automated understanding and generation of narratives
• Distinction between story (fabula) and plot (sjuzhet) that contain the same events
The plot transforms a pure chronology form into one that highlights the conflicts,
how they came about and how they are resolved by the characters
Constructionist
• The narrative mode of knowing consists in organizing the experience with the help
of a scheme assuming the intentionality of human action
• An explanation consists in relating an event to a human project
• The plot rather than the truth or falsity of story elements determines the power of
the narrative as story
• No way to decide of deciding between different stories except by negotiation
