2. Email

•transmit or receive materials in violation of federal or state laws or regulations pertaining to copyrighted, threatening or obscene materials, including sexually explicit materials;

•use JCPSNet for personal or commercial activities, product promotion, political lobbying, or illegal activities.

Scenario #1:A student receives harassing emails from another student. The student tells a teacher.

The teacher tells the student to just ignore the emails. Is this the best advice?

Did you know?Students’ communication extends far beyond the hallways. Text messaging, social media websites and other emerging technologies are making it increasingly easier to send threatening or bullying messages to other students.

Just remember…Just as if this were a paper note found in the hallway or a conversation overheard, it should be reported and treated like any other threatening behavior.

Did you know?E-mail is often times an original piece of work that once created is copyright protected by the author. This means you cannot post publicly an e-mail sent to you privately.

Email is considered written communication and permanent documentation.

Just remember…We often times don’t think of email as being a copywritten piece of work, but technically speaking, it is ‘published’ on servers and recorded with time/date stamps. Best practice is to forward emails with permission from the original sender.

JCPS email is subject to open record laws, no email should be considered private.

It is unethical to use the words, images, videos, music or other digital works from other people without their expressed permission or citing the source of your information.

Just remember…Always cite your sources. If you are in doubt, check with your Local Media Specialist (Librarian) for information on how to properly cite a source.

Many times, images will be watermarked or contain the copyright information on the graphic. Do not alter that information.

Did you know?When you rent or purchase a movie, the licensing from the studios is that the DVD may only be shown in your private residence.

That rental is not intended to be shown to a broader, classroom audience.

Use instructional videos from sources such as KET’s EncycloMedia.

4. Printing

Scenario:A teacher prints a couple of copies of an event advertisement for the local neighborhood association.
