What is attribution?....Attribution = ................. reasons for

success or failure

When you succeed how do you feel?

When you fail how do you feel?

Why do we want to understand attribution in relation to sport?

Page 3: Attribution Theory revision

What is attribution?....Attribution = perceived reasons for success or failure.

When you succeed how do you feel?Happy, satisfied, proud, motivated = development of

approach behaviour (LINK with achievement motivation)

When you fail how do you feel?Sad, de motivated, embarrassed (in an assessment

situation LINK to social inhibition), unsatisfied = development of avoidance behaviour (LINK with achievement motivation).

Why do we want to understand attribution in relation to sport?

The attribution this performer has given for his failure is ................................................................?

Page 19: Attribution Theory revision

“I'm not good enough I shouldn't have taken it!!”The attribution this performer has given for his failure is

INTERNAL STABLE!You are this performers coach and you have

discussed the penalty kick with him and realised that he has attributed his failure to his own ability. The performer has said he will never take a penalty kick again.

1.What is this performer experiencing?2.As a coach what do you hope to develop in this

performer to improve future performance?3.Describe how you would teach and encourage this

performer to use appropriate attributions for success and failure.

4.Explain how this would effect future performance and maintenance of a balanced, healthy and active lifestyle.
