What are asynchronous

communication tools? Asynchronous, or ‘Anytime, Anywhere

Tools’, allow your students to fully

participate at their own convenience.

There is no specified meeting time, or

schedule that they must abide by.

Let’s Define: Discussion Forum

An Internet forum, or message board,

where people can hold conversations in

the form of posted messages. A single

topic, or conversation is called a ‘thread’

Let’s Define: Email

Electronic mail – a message composed at one

computer terminal that is received by

another user at a computer terminal

Blackboard acts only as a launch pad for

email and users receive it in their

@sandiego.edu mailbox

Let’s Define: Messaging

Within Blackboard, messaging is much

like email that is contained within the

application and not sent to actual email

addresses.

WebCT users: Email is now Messaging

Let’s Define: Blog

A ‘web log’ or blog is a site on which an

individual or group of users record

opinions, information, etc. on a regular

basis.

Let’s Define: Wiki

A web site developed collaboratively by a

community of users, allowing any user to

add and edit content.

Wikipedia and Google docs are good

examples

A personal record of occurrences,

experiences kept on a regular basis, also

referred to as a diary, and in education is

often reflective in nature.

In Blackboard, an instructor tool that

posts a message within the class, and
