What is the purpose of film magazines?

• Film magazines have the purpose to attract film lovers, and allow them to not only know more about the film industry, all different processes such as pre-production, production, post-production but to also know the vital information about films like their release date.

• Newly released films will explain to the readers how they made the film and may even show behind the scene pictures to give the audience a better understanding about the process.

Where are film magazines available?

• Total film has a website where you can order your film magazine or you can download a “free digital edition”.

• You can also view magazines on their on your device if they have an app or online as a PDF.

• Most book stores sell magazines as well such as WHSmith or Waterstones.

What is the typical size for magazines?

• The standard normal paperback magazine size is 8 3/8” x 10 7/8

• As there are magazines online, as PDF’s or on apps they obviously differ.

How are magazine covers attractive to the audience? Does the attraction differ than

that of the film?

• Magazine covers attract audience because they show vital information about different films such as behind the scene photos or the actors that will appear in the film.

• The attraction of the magazine differs than that of the film because the magazine will be picked up/looked up by a wider target audience with no specific age or gender.

Main Image

• The main image is usually a mid shot or long shot of a celebrity.

• This is usually the main topic inside the magazine.

Masthead

• The mast head is usually at the top of the page and in big bold font to make it recognisable for the readers.

Colour Palette

• The colour palette will differ from each magazine.

• They might want to keep to a pattern to keep organisation and simplicity or they might do a range of colours to link to the feature article or main image.

Feature Article

• The feature article is either the main image or the main text of the magazine, as it will be what catches peoples attention the most.

Similarities and differences between magazines?

• There are a few similarities between magazines:

• The main image is usually the feature article of the magazine.

• Colour palette most magazines stick to around 2/3 different colours.

• There are a few differences between magazines:

• Slogan not every magazine has a slogan.

• The mast head is not always in the same place, and also some magazines have a letter or a symbol and not a title.

Priorities:

• The three things that most films prioritise:

1. The mass head- this is the brand image (title/symbol) this is done in order for the readers to recognise the magazine.

2. The central image- this gives the audience some knowledge of what is featured in the magazine

3. Cover lines- this is the main text on the magazine cover which will be used to catch the readers attention to the information inside the magazine.
