In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

My media music magazine uses, develops and challenges the forms and conventions of real media products. I did this by paying attention to detail in different rock, popular and Indie magazines and using some of there ideas in my layout that I produced. I also challenged the forms and conventions by using the ideas off other magazines but displaying them in a different way. Overall in my media projects I used conventional methods to present my work keeping to the style of popular magazines, their layout and features but in some of my work I did try and use unconventional methods to see what it would look like. I used other examples of contents pages and incorporated them into my magazine. I used pictures, quotes and different layouts on the page to explain to the audience what was inside the magazine. I placed the information on the left hand side because it looks conventional. For example on my front page I used a bright background instead of a dark background. My bright colour scheme using red really makes it pop out of the page, Usually in rock/indie magazines dark and dull colours are used because it attracts that kind of audience, I wanted to change this to appeal my product to a wider variety of people.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups by focusing and targeting on different types of music. I deliberately styled my magazine to appeal to more than one music market the reason for this is that I didn’t want to attract one type of social group as this restricts the buyers, as this media products ultimate goal is to attract buyers and make a profit restricting the buyers would be pointless. I thought that it would be better to use a range a music that is similar than concentrating on one type of music such as Rock or heavy metal. Using young and fresh images that can be applied to many genres of music make my magazine easy on the eye for any open minded music lover to read. Using fonts that are not to complex also make it easier to target more than one social group, if my font consisted of a eroded font it would only fit in with a rock genre so using a simple, clean cut and youthful font really opens up the appeal to a wider range of social groups.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are a number of shops that would distribute my magazine, a few examples are:

. Large and small Super markets

. Stationary and book stores such as WHSmiths

. Record shops

. Newsagents Newsagents and supermarkets usually sell these magazines because they aim to

sell a wide range of magazines to cater for a wide range of peoples interests. Also super markets and newsagents sell magazines to entice people into the shop, so they might be tempted to buy other products in the store. Also I could advertise online for people to subscribe for the magazine, the internet is seen by many more people so a chance of your magazine being seen and eventually bought.

Who would be the audience for your media product ?

When producing my media product I thought about what was missing in the current market, I decided to design a magazine that appeals to people who like all types of music, not a pop magazine but a popular music magazine. I didn’t plan to target any gender in particularly because I didn’t want this to restrict the audience of my magazine. I made sure that I didn’t attract only one type of gender by using pictures that appeal to both men and women in the magazine ,also I used male and female news in my magazine and I also used male and female bands in the magazine. My article and bands featured are aimed at teenagers and young adults as they could relate to the stories inside.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience by using a strong image on the front cover and popular artists featured inside. I used bright colours and a conventional layout which is typical of a magazine. I have used quotes on the front cover to entice the audience in so they want to read the inside stories

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

I have learnt so much on photo shop, how to use to layers, also how to shootphotos and what light people look best in. Its amazing how far my skills have improved since the preliminary task.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from

it to the full product.

I have learnt so much since my preliminary task, my magazine has developed in so many ways, My prelim looked extremely unprofessional and very amateur. My front cover now looks professional and uses conventions and codes typical of a music magazine. The photo looks more professional as I used an SLR CANNON camera which focused more on the person I was shooting, my images also look more airbrushed to give that magazine feel.
