Chapter 5 – Foundations of Mathematics 11 – Nelson
New vs OldSpecific Outcomes It is expected that students will: • 11A.S.1. Demonstrate an
understanding of normal distribution, including: – standard deviation – z-scores. – [CN, PS, T, V]
• 11A.S.2. Interpret statistical data, using: – confidence intervals – confidence levels – margin of error. – [C, CN, R, T]
Specific Outcomes• Find the population
standard deviation of a data set using technology
• Use z-scores and z-score tables to solve problems
• Use the normal distribution and the normal approximation to the normal distribution to solve problems involving confidence intervals for large samples
Pretty much the same?
What’s different?
•No binomial or approximations to the binomial distributions•Margin of error is highlighted more
What can we do to make this work for Gr 11 students?
More hands on?Use technology – text likes to promote by hand method first

Intro to Standard Deviation Activity
Other ideas
•Hand Spans – measure the hand span of everybody in the room.•Measure hand span of family members (incl. children)•Which one will have larger / smaller standard deviation?
Aims - http://www.tc.umn.edu/~aims/aimstopicsVariability.htm
Have students predict what items to be measured would have a smaller deviation?e.g. fruit - circumference of oranges, grapefruits
Manitoba Math Teachers – NING or Wiki – is anyone interested?
Other opinions re: textbook – concerns etc.
