Antonio Vivaldi 1678 – 1741
Antonio Vivaldi was born on March 4, 1678 in Venice Italy.
He was born into a large family.
His father taught him to
play the violin.
After studying the priesthood for 10 years, he became a
priest in 1703.
He was known as the “Red Priest”
because of his bright red
hair.
He became a music teacher at the Hospital of
Mercy, also called The Pietà.
Girls were not allowed to perform in public, they would perform using a
gallery.
Vivaldi spent most of his life
teaching at the Pietà.
He wrote hundreds of compositions for the girls to perform.
Later in life, he
moved to Vienna. He
died in 1741.
