About Forum-Nexus Study Abroad:

Forum-Nexus Study Abroad has a track record of 19 years of successful intensive summer and winter programs in Europe. Since 1990, over 2,500 students have participated in Forum-Nexus programs in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Britain, Netherlands, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

The courses are open to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to alumni seeking professional development.

Classes:• Each student enrolls in either one or two courses of 3

credits each. • Depending on the city, classes are held either on

campus or in conference rooms at the hotels. Classes are usually held Monday through Friday in the morning. There are usually no classes on Saturday or Sunday.

• The main professor for each course travels with the group from city to city. The professors are highly experienced, multilingual, and cosmopolitan.

EUR 337/637: Introduction to the European Union:

Economics, Politics, Culture and Society: This course provides an inter-disciplinary overview of the history, evolution and current challenges facing the European Union. It focuses on the economic and political rationale for closer integration, on the difficulties of reconciling sharply different cultural, legal and political traditions, on the stresses caused by immigration and enlargement, and on the recent challenges presented by the global economic and financial crisis..

COM 312/612: Cross-Cultural Communication: Understanding Cultural Differences in Europe

In an increasingly globalized and flat world, the ability of companies and individuals to be effective internationally has become a key ingredient for commercial and personal success. Set in the highly multicultural environment of the European Union, this course will develop the students’ cross-cultural skills and offer a hands-on learning experience that will greatly benefit them personally and professionally.

BUS 326/626: International Business:

This course presents a systematic overview of international business. There will be an integrated progression of topics ranging from understanding the political, economic, cultural and economic influences on international trade and investment flows, to the analysis of the strategic and operational alternatives when conducting international business. Through practical case-studies, team projects and visits to leading European companies and organizations, the students will be exposed to the actual implementation of the topics covered in class on real-life companies.

MKT 354/654: International Marketing

This course focuses on the development of essential understanding, knowledge and skills for engaging in global marketing activities. It provides a thorough overview of the key dimensions of the international business environment, including political, social, economic, legal, and cultural issues. Special topics emphasized include the impact of the global economic crisis, the growing importance of environmental concerns, and dealing with corruption and bribes. The course takes a close look at the various elements of the marketing mix in order to understand how they must be adapted in response to different market conditions, taking into consideration a multitude of competitive, cultural and strategic considerations. Lessons include: lectures, case-studies, team projects, exercises, visits to leading European companies and global organizations, and daily real-life observations in the European countries visited.

FIN 388/688: International Financial Markets: Understanding the Global Financial Crisis

This course offers a broad introduction to the workings of the global financial system, the dynamics of the main financial markets, the nature and goals of the key financial institutions and the crucial role played by central banks and regulatory agencies. An important part of the course focuses on the 2007-2009 global economic and financial crisis, reviewing its causes and consequences, as well as evaluating the merits of the numerous government intervention schemes in the U.S. and Europe. The course ends with an assessment of the dramatic changes taking place in the global financial architecture as a result of the crisis.

MGT 313/613: Cross-Cultural Management:

This course focuses on the study of international management practices and managing diversity in the context of understanding multicultural and international affairs. The objectives of the course are to understand the impact of culture on international management, to identify the areas in which cultural differences present a challenge in communication with persons of different cultures, and to explore ourcultural backgrounds and distinctive management assumptions and practices. The course is designed to be a stepping-stone for students to become cross-culturally effective managers. It will help students become more self aware of our cultural conditioning, individual biases and assumptions and the way they impact our interactions with people who are different from us. The course will include visits to leading European companies and international organizations in which different aspects of the topic will emerge through presentations and conversations with company executives. In this way, the students will be able to see the practical relevance of the concepts covered in class.

Forum-Nexus Study Abroad was the brainchild of Dr. Hugo Hervitz, a highly respected professor of International Business in Miami, an economics commentator for CNN, and a passionate proponent of global education and cross-cultural sensitivity. Professor Hervitz brought together an elite multinational team of experienced senior European professors:

Dr. Hugo Hervitz is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at the Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale. He has been a Professor of Economics and International Business in South Florida for over 25 years, specializing in International Trade and Finance in Europe and Latin America. He also teaches Cross Cultural Communication for the Global MBA Program at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Dr. Hervitz founded Forum-Nexus Study Abroad in 1990 and has been its Executive Director ever since. Dr. Hervitz was born in Argentina and has a B.A. in Economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a Master’s degree in Management from Imperial College in London, an M.A. in Economics and Latin American Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Indiana University. He has been a visiting professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico, at the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona, at the Fachhochschule Kufstein in Austria, and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

Week 3 is in Italy! The first stop will be Milan, the economic and financial center of Italy and world capital of fashion. Classes are held in the beautiful historic campus of the Catholic University of Milan, housed in the buildings of a 14th century monastery. Professional Visits:In addition to insightful classes, students learn a great deal from a number of valuable professional visits. Based on the courses they are taking, students will be able to visit:

•leading European companies, •international organizations, •financial institutions, •government agencies, •multinational corporations •non-governmental organizations.

Most visits include detailed discussions with officials of the companies and organizations. Each student will visit at least four companies or organizations per class. The professional visits are usually held in the afternoon.
